Speak Up: Kids at the Gym

Of course I believe in teaching kids about fitness and how exercise should be a part of daily life, but recently a new policy at my friend's gym got me thinking. Kids are allowed to come to her gym. If they're over four years old, they can participate in fitness classes (or just sit in the back and watch their parents), and if they're over 10, they can use the treadmills. They're even allowed to use the free weights and machines if they're over 12, with parental assistance of course.

I don't have a problem with this because I support kids and exercise, but some gym members have complained. Many of them go to the gym to have time alone, away from their children, and they want the stress-free environment that a gym full of adults offers. So how do you feel about kids at the gym? Can they work out at your gym?

Speak Up: How Do You Get Back on Track?

Creating a simple routine helps me make sure I have all my duckies in a row, from clean gym clothes packed in my gym bag to a meal plan for the week with steel cut oats started for breakfast. I love ending my weekend with a nice relaxing soak in the tub, which helps me sleep better so I start my upcoming week refreshed and ready to go.

Do you have a Sunday evening ritual or a routine to help you get ready for the upcoming week? Or perhaps you wait until Monday morning? Please tell me how you get your life in order after a hectic weekend in the comments section below.

Speak Up: How Do You Destress?

It's a wonderful time of year, with the Fall leaves changing and multiple holiday gatherings with family and friends in the pipeline. Unfortunately, the busy season can make our already thinly spread lives more stressful than usual, which can lead to overeating and restless nights.

Exercise is always an effective way to destress, but some women find solace in things like cooking, reading, watching an episode of their favorite TV show, talking it out with their partner or friends, taking a leisurely shower or bath, and even cleaning can be a productive way to work through built-up tension. What's your go-to destress tactic?

Speak Up: How Have You Been Affected by Breast Cancer?

It's disheartening that breast cancer is so prevalent, and I'm sure every one of you knows someone who's been diagnosed, has recovered, or lost the battle against this horrible disease. Many of you have stories to share, and by letting others know it increases awareness about breast cancer and connects us in some way. For me, knowing that I'm not the only one with close friends affected by this disease makes it a little more bearable. So tell me, how have you been touched by breast cancer?

Speak Up: What Foods Give You Gas?

It is uncomfortable, makes you feel bloated, and can be super embarrassing when you're in a small room with a handful of people. So I was wondering, what foods tend to make you gassy? Do you eat these foods anyway, and deal with the odorous consequences, or do you avoid foods that make you toot?

Speak Up: Rude Comments About Your Weight?

I have a close friend who has gradually put on weight over the past year. It's not a huge deal, but pretty out of character since she's always been an active and fit person. With a crazy work schedule and stress, she's been eating more and hardly exercising, so she's gained about 30 pounds. We were shopping the other day and ran into an acquaintance we hadn't seen in almost a year. The woman said something you never say to a fellow female unless you know for sure. She asked, "Are you pregnant?" My friend was devastated and quietly answered, "No, I just haven't been taking care of myself." The woman wasn't trying to be mean, but it was really hurtful. On a positive note, the eye-opening comment really inspired my friend to get back into the gym.

So I'm wondering, has anyone ever made a negative comment about your weight or appearance? What rude remarks about how you've gained weight or look too thin? If so, how did you handle it? Share your stories in the comment section below.

Speak Up: How Do You Feel About Working Out in Public?

Some of us use the crowds at the gym to motivate us to exercise harder, while some of us get paralyzed by exercising in front of other folks. In a recent interview, Ricky Gervais said that he just bought a house with a gym in the basement, not because of convenience, but so he never has to exercise in public. His sentiments lead me to think about my friend who basically only uses exercise videos to work out because she has the same reservations as The Office creator.

Me, I am not one to worry about what others think, though I do save some of my "hip-thrusting" moves for home workouts. I know my pal and Gervais are not alone here, so what are your thoughts about exercising in public. Does it motivate you or mortify you? Or are you indifferent? Speak up and share your thoughts below.

Speak Up: Have You Ever Felt Unsafe When Exercising Outdoors?

I live in a pretty safe neighborhood, but that doesn't mean I feel at ease running alone when it's dark. I just feel too vulnerable and have heard too many tales of women assaulted while running alone, so I run with a buddy or stick to a well-populated area.

Also, if I'm trail running or mountain biking, I never listen to music so I can hear what's going on around me. I adopted this rule after visiting the East Coast and being startled on the running trail by an enormous moose. It was pretty frightening for this city girl. So tell me — have you ever felt unsafe, in urban areas or the woods, or encountered any scary experiences while exercising outdoors? If so, share your stories in the comment section below.

Speak Up: What's Your Proudest Moment?

Recently when I was writing about Matt Damon and his triathlon, I reminisced about my own completion of a triathlon — though I did the whole thing on my own! I'm very proud of a lot of my fitness accomplishments, the triathlon being among my proudest moments, but I would have to say that my favorite achievement was just simply becoming a runner.

Years ago, I refused to run. I despised it because my endurance was not up to par and I could only run a few minutes before getting totally winded and I just hated it. After much practice and patience, I am now able to run miles on end and it feels great. Have you had a proud fitness moment? It could be as big as completing a marathon or something small such as joining a gym. Speak up and share your proudest health and/or fitness moment and maybe you'll motivate someone to reach their goal, too!

Speak Up: How Many Calories Do You Consume in a Day?

With so many people trying to lose weight, counting calories seems to be on everybody's mind. Some people keep food journals or measure out their portions to monitor their calorie intake. Others follow a dietitian's strict food plan, and some people just guesstimate the amount of calories they eat in daily. If you're trying to lose weight, you should never really dip below 1,200 calories in day, and most women need between 1,200 and 2000 calories a day. It depends on how active you are and how much you currently weigh. So I was wondering, how many calories do you consume in a day? Is it something you keep track of or do you eat what you want and not worry about calories?

Source

But I know oatmeal is not all you eat for breakfast; in fact, I'm sure some of you don't even like oatmeal. So speak up and tell us what you eat for breakfast. It doesn't even have to be healthy (but bravo if it is). I'd love to get a few new ideas, and I'm sure everyone else would too.
Speak Up: How Do You Feel About Lasik Eye Surgery?

I started wearing glasses when I was in fourth grade and later switched to contacts. I can't see without either, especially the alarm clock in the early hours of the day. Every morning, the site of the fuzzy alarm clock sends thoughts of Lasik Eye Surgery running through my mind. It sounds so simple; you walk into the doctor's office, everything's blurry, and after the surgery everything's clear. While it sounds amazing, I do have a friend who had the surgery, but still needs to wear glasses. I guess for some folks, the success rate isn't that great.

Lasik is also super pricey, and I'm not sure I could go through with an operation like this knowing there's a possibility that it wouldn't work. Also, the actual procedure freaks me out a little. A laser in my eye? I don't think I'd ever be ready for that.

What do you think? Have you ever thought about having Lasik Eye Surgery? Have you already gone through this procedure? If so, would you recommend it to others? Do you know anyone who's had a bad experience? I'd love to hear your thoughts so share in the comments section them below.

Speak Up: How Much Weight Are You Trying to Lose?

When you decide you need to lose weight, it can be a daunting task so it's best to have a weight-loss goal in mind before you begin. I'm talking about a specific goal, as in a number of pounds you're trying to lose. You can come up with this number on your own or with the help of your doctor or dietitian. When you do come up with a number, sometimes it helps to share it with people, to make your goal more concrete. So tell me, how much weight are you trying to lose? Five pounds? 15 pounds? 30 pounds? More than that? Or are you completely satisfied with your weight?

Share your dieting goals in the comments section below.

Speak Up: Crazy Commuting

I am a big fan of biking to work. Commuting via bike can seem perilous on busy city streets, but new research show that the more people ride bicycles on city streets, the less likely they are to be injured in traffic accidents. It seems that motorist drive more safely in the presence of cyclists and pedestrians as well. Yay!

This increase in road safety did not help Jim Litz, of Missoula, MT. Biking to work, he "T-boned" a black bear as he crested a hill going 25 mph. Luckily, Litz escaped with minor injuries — a cracked helmet, a bear scratch, and a few bruises. Talk about a crazy commute.

It seems that as the length of the average workday increases, the commute pulls double duty and has transformed into a workout for some of us. Even the folks at Runner's World are promoting the notion of running to work. I would like to hear your stories about your commute and how you pack in exercise as you go to and from your job: bike, run, skate, or walk. Do you stand on the subway to work your core? Any other bear accidents out there? Tell me in the comments section below.

Speak Up: What's Your Sleeping Schedule?

Adequate sleep is a vital part of a healthy life. Not catching enough Zs has been linked to migraines, heart problems, a weakend immune system, high blood pressure, weight issues, and of course crankiness.

While it's best to aim for seven to eight hours of sleep a night, no one says you need to hit the sheets by 10 p.m. So what is your sleep schedule? Do you feel like you get enough sleep? Do you go to bed at the same time every night and wake up every morning at the same time? What about on the weekends? Share your sleep schedule in the comments section below.

Speak Up: Are You Surprised by the Sweet Surprise Ads

The Corn Refiners Association is fighting back. They are sick and tired of their favorite ingredient high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) being maligned by the liberal press. They have hired a PR agent and an ad team to teach you that HFCS is not only good for you, it is natural as well. The first time I saw this ad, my jaw dropped to the floor. This over simplification of this very processed sweetener was quite a shock to me.

I guess you can tell how I feel about these ads, but what about you. Tell me, are you surprised by these ads? Do they confuse you? Anger you? Entertain you? Let me know what you think in the comments section below.

It scored the top ranking of 100 on the Overall Nutritional Quality Index.
Speak Up: Getting Naked in the Locker Room

I would say that the locker room became an emotionally loaded issue during junior high or high school. Getting naked with a bunch of strangers is definitely not an American pastime. Other cultures take steam baths in public regularly and topless sunbathing is common all over Europe. It seems like FitSugar reader are split in how they feel about their bodies naked. I read Locker Room Diaries last Summer and I emailed the author, my blogging buddy Leslie, whenever I have a "partially clothed" conversation in the locker room.

After reading her book, I have noticed how different women approach changing and showering at the gym. So now I am wondering about how you all feel about getting naked in the locker room? Are you comfortable with it, or do you change at home? The showers at my gym are communal, and I have seen ladies wearing swimsuits while washing their hair as well as women shaving all sorts of hair in the shower. Do you shower at the gym? How about the sauna or the steam room? Speak up and tell me how you feel about getting naked in the locker room.

We are surrounded by TV, movies, and magazines, making it hard not to notice gorgeous celebrities. I know they get paid to look good, and they definitely have some help along the way. I'd give away my iPod nano in a second for just one hour with Madonna's trainer. How about you?
Speak Up: What Sports Movie Motivates You Most?

While I was getting all choked up about A League of Their Own, I started thinking about how motivating a great sports movie can be. Whether it's a weepy figure-skating story (Ice Castles, anyone?) or a classic baseball flick like Field of Dreams, sports movies can be emotionally riveting and highly entertaining. So speak up and tell me: Which sports-centric film motivates you the most?

Speak Up: What's Your Favorite Way to Exercise?

For me, my favorite form of exercise is riding my bike. Sure running is good, swimming is relaxing, and I even like hitting the gym, but riding my bike is truly fun. Not only am I brought back to my days as a kid, but I love being outdoors and exploring new areas while burning calories. I know that bike riding is a favorite among many, but not all, so what is your favorite way to exercise? Speak up and share which exercise you actually look forward to doing. Hopefully, everyone's answers will inspire us all to find the joy in exercise.

Speak Up: Has Your Family Ever Pressured You to Diet or Be Thin?

We learn a lot about relationships from our immediate family. Not only do we learn how to relate to other people, but also things like money and food. If fact, researchers have found that sitting down to regular family meals can help prevent eating disorders. Ahhh . . . but the home front isn't always so sweet and homey, and negative lessons can be learned in there as well. I think of the painful mother-daughter relationship in Spanglish, where the character played by Tea Leoni buys clothes many sizes too small for her daughter.

How was the family dynamic around food and body image in your house while growing up? Did anyone pressure you to lose weight? If you're a parent, how do you talk about your weight in front of your kids? How do you talk to them about their food choices? For being one of our basic needs, food can be quite an emotionally-loaded subject. Share your stories in the comment section below.

Speak Up: Is Obama Too Fit?

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal questions Barack Obama's ability to run our nation. Not because of his views on the war or on taxes, but because he is too fit. WTF?

In a country where 66 percent of the voting-age population are overweight and 32 percent are obese, could Obama's fitness be an issue? Obama openly claims to work out and eat healthy — and he's even quit smoking (yay!). Folks are wondering if Obama is too hard to relate to as more than half of the nation is struggling with weight issues. John McCain on the other hand, doesn't lift weights (cause he can't due to an injury) and has expressed his love for junk food. Obviously, I think that having a fit president would be fabulous, but as much as I love health and fitness it's not going to be a factor in who I vote for.

So what do you guys think about all this? Do you care about our next president's health? Does it matter to you if he does or does not work out, or if he does or does not eat junk food? Do you think that being overly fit could hurt a presidential candidate's chances of taking over the White House? Speak up and share your thoughts below.

Speak Up: What Sports Did You Play as a Kid?

Playing sports is so important when you're young, especially for girls. Being on a team or training for an individual sport like tennis or track helps to build friendships, teaches you how to communicate and work with others, and builds confidence, and it's a great way to encourage kids to get in the habit of staying active. When I was a kid, soccer was my sport, but I'd play just about anything. So what about you? Did you play sports as a kid? If so, tell me: What sports were you involved in?

Source
Speak Up: Have You Ever Attended an Olympic Event?

Given that the 2008 Summer Olympics are being held in Beijing, most of us will probably be watching this year's festivities on TV. But when the games took place in Atlanta in 1996, I knew a lot of people who attended at least a few events, if not many. Have you ever been lucky enough to check out some Olympic action live and in person? If so, what events did you catch, and what was it like?

Like most people, I wouldn't mind checking out some of the gymnastics, and soccer also seems like it would also be fun to watch. If you've never been an Olympics spectator, what sport would you want to get tickets to if you could?

Speak Up: Who's Your Favorite Current Athlete?

Spring and Summer are busy seasons in the wide world of sports, and the Olympics are just around the corner. Exciting competitions like Wimbledon and the US Open, not to mention the ongoing baseball season, definitely make for good entertainment.

The athletes are fun to watch and inspiring, too, so I was wondering . . .

Speak Up: Have You Ever Jeopardized Your Health?

The world of cycling takes another blow as yet another cyclist — the third this race — has been booted from the Tour de France after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

While doping compromises a sport's validity, a bigger issue is that athletes are willing to risk their own health in hopes of victory. With the Olympics just around the corner, the issue of doping is at the forefront of discussions and at first I want to say, "Why are they so dumb?" but then I am led to my own health blips in life. While I can say that I've never taken steroids, I have put myself on some seriously stupid, and radically unhealthy, diets in hopes of achieving weight loss.

I'm obviously curious about you guys. Have you ever done anything to jeopardize your own health in hopes of achieving something more (weight loss, a trophy, good grades, popularity, etc.)? Speak up and share your thoughts, I know you guys have some great things to add — you always do!

Speak Up: What Was Your Diet Like As a Kid?

I grew up eating mac 'n' cheese, hotdogs, peanut butter and jelly (on Wonderbread, of course), and sugary cereals for breakfast. I don't remember ever eating a salad, and come to think of it, I didn't eat many vegetables at all (unless you count french fries at McDonald's). My parents just weren't big into eating healthy, but it is cool to see how we've all come around. While I love fruits, veggies, and whole grains and love teaching my girls how to select the perfect peach at the store, I have turned my mother onto brussels sprouts. Needless to say, I feel happy knowing I am taking better care of myself, but I also feel a lot better eating healthy.

So what about you? What was your diet like when you were younger? Was it much different than it is today? Did you learn healthy eating habits from your parents, or did you create your own. Tell me in the comment section below.

Speak Up: How Does the Weather Affect Your Workouts?

Since I love to exercise outside, if the weather is crummy, I'm definitely less enthusiastic to work out. I admit that I've woken up ready to go for an early morning run, saw that it was raining, and climbed back in bed. I could have popped in a fitness DVD or lifted some weights, but the weather dampened my get-up-and-go. On the other hand, when the weather is gorgeous out, suddenly I'm excited to go for a family bike ride after work, when otherwise I would have just come home and done nothing. For me, weather is a huge factor when it comes to exercise.

So tell me, how does the weather affect your workouts?

Speak Up: What Forms of Exercise Have You Tried and Not Liked?

I mix it up between running, biking, swimming, as well as outdoorsy activities hiking and kayaking. I love yoga, Pilates, and weightlifting. I tried branching out and experimented with rock climbing, windsurfing, and horseback riding, but they were either too expensive or not for me. What about you? Are there certain types of exercise that you dabbled with that didn't stick?

Speak Up: How Do You Feel About Scales?

We keep a scale in our bathroom, and I must admit I weigh myself sporadically, but at least once a week. I don't think I am obsessive about it, but I found that it helps me to maintain my weight. If you're trying to lose weight, studies show that weighing yourself daily is an effective way to make it happen. I also think it's great to check in with a scale every so often, to make sure you don't exceed your red-flag weight. Do you agree or are you against using one? Do you think scales promote negative body images? Tell me ladies, how do you feel about scales?

Speak Up: When It Comes to Your Health, Are There Certain Foods You Won't Touch?

I recently met a couple of moms from my daughters' school for lunch. When trying to decide where to eat, I mentioned the local pizza place. One of the moms refused though, saying she never eats pizza because it's too fattening. Personally, there's no way I could live without an occasional slice, but since there are certain foods I won't touch (like fried chicken), I had to respect her wishes. So I was wondering, are there specific foods you won't touch because they seem too fattening or unhealthy? Tell me all about them in the comment section below.

Speak Up: What One Workout Goal Would You Like to Accomplish?

Goals are very personal, and for me, I like to set a few small goals, rather than one huge one. My previous goal was to be able to consistently run faster (under 8:30-minute miles), but now I'm working on my endurance. My goal is to be able to run regularly for 45 minutes, every time I run. What about you? Maybe you want to be able to swim a certain number of laps without getting tired or maybe you want to be able to run a 5K? Speak up and share one (or more) specific workout goals that you're trying to accomplish.

Speak Up: Mirrors in Fitness Classes?

If you belong to a gym that offers fitness classes or you take classes at a yoga, martial arts, or dance studio, there's a good chance that one side of the room is covered in wall-to-wall mirrors.

Now I'm all for using mirrors to check my form and alignment while lifting weights or doing strength-training moves, but what do you think about having a huge mirror opposite you for an entire class? Do you like seeing yourself or being able to see others? Or is it too much of a distraction? Does it make you feel self-conscious, or does it inspire you to work harder?

When I was in college, I gained well over the Freshman 15, and when I had my annual doctor's appointment, I was shocked at the numbers on the scale. From that point on, I made a little pact with myself to lose the extra weight, and to keep it off, and to never let myself get past that amount again. All these years since college this is one life lesson that has stuck.

So I was wondering, do you too have a red-flag weight? Does it work for you? Tell us all about it in the comment section below.

Speak Up: At What Age Did You Start Working Out Regularly?

I grew up being physically active. I danced, played sports, and rode my bike everywhere. My interest in exercise and my intensity have waxed and waned over the years, but I always did something.

I have settled down into a reliable relationship with working out. I need to be consistent or I will go a little crazy, and if I skip a run, I do feel like I am cheating on running. So I was wondering, at what age did you get into working out, or do you feel like it is something you have always done? Did someone inspire you to do it because of health reasons? Did you do it to lose weight or tone up? Or were you interested in a sport or activity? Tell me in the comment section below.

Speak Up: Which Celebrities Inspire You to Work Out?

When it comes to getting the motivation to eat healthy and exercise regularly, people find motivation all over the place. Maybe you're inspired by an upcoming event like a vacation, or maybe you have health problems in your family you want to avoid, or you have a personal weight goal you want to achieve.

Seeing other people living healthy lifestyles, especially celebrities, can actually be inspirational. While I really appreciate not needing to worry how I will look in a bikini on film, I do find inspiration in celebs who take care of themselves because it makes them feel confident and full of energy. Jennifer Garner, Madonna, Ashlee Simpson, Sheryl Crow, Hayden Panettiere and Hilary Swank are a few of the celebs that inspire me on days when I don't feel like exercising. So tell me, which celebs inspire you to work out and be healthy?

Speak Up: How Do You Handle New Health Studies?

Each day new research comes out on health topics that are negating or proving something else that you've heard. Take for example, the latest news that having a big booty may protect against diabetes. But I thought having too much fat was a risk factor of type 2 diabetes? Should I just stick to side-bends and sit-ups? And should I, or shouldn't I, drink eight glasses of water a day? It's all very confusing.

I am curious how you guys handle all the new health studies and research that we hear about daily on the news? Do you ignore it completely or do you change what you do frequently with each new study? Perhaps you're a little more levelheaded and take it all with a grain of salt. So speak up and share how you handle health news. I am sure many of us are feeling confused and it would be nice to see we're not alone.

Speak Up: How Do You Cure Hiccups?

Hiccups are no fun; they're annoying, loud, and they hurt your belly. Bouts of them usually last for just a few minutes, but that's not the case for Chris Sands – he's been suffering from hiccups for 15 years. Sands has tried various cures such as hypnosis and yoga, as well as 100 different variations of drinking water, but nothing has cured his problem. He has them as often as every two seconds, and they disrupt his sleep. Even brain and chest scans haven't helped determine the causes of his decade-and-half hiccup attack. His personal theory is that acid reflux condition has damaged the valve in his stomach and Sands hopes surgery can help.

Maybe he hasn't tried everything, though. I'm sure many of you have unique ways to cure hiccups, so please share them in the comment section below.

Speak Up: How Do You Feel About Wearing a Helmet While Bike Riding?

When I was a kid, there were no bike helmets – just wind in my hair. Unfortunately bike accidents can mean head injuries, and that's why helmets are encouraged today. Now that I'm a mom, I wouldn't think of letting my girls ride their bikes or trikes without a helmet. I must admit, I really use to despise wearing one myself. They're not very attractive and I felt like a helmet interfered with my sense of awareness. Now, I am totally used to the sensation of the helmet and really appreciate the little visor on the front of mine. How do you feel about wearing a helmet while bike riding? Are there any laws in your town about bike helmets? Do you think everyone should wear one all the time, or maybe only on certain roads? Should helmets only be for children? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Speak Up: How Do You Deal With Your Seasonal Allergies?

I am so excited about the warm Spring weather and everything blooming outside, but my body isn't. Seasonal allergies are hitting me especially hard this year. I used to only get a stuffy nose, but now I'm sneezing and blowing my nose like crazy. I can't deal with feeling crappy, so I've been taking Claratin every day. It seems like I can't live without it.

Speak Up: What Song Is Motivating You Right Now?

I use it to keep going and have found that without it, I have a hard time getting moving. I am currently really into Gnarls Barkley's new song "Run." The lyrics, "Run children, run for your life," resonate with me health wise because I think to myself, I am really running for my "life"! Plus it doesn't hurt that it's got a good beat for running.

I know you have some songs that are particularly motivating you to get moving right now and I am always looking for new stuff to add to my workout playlist, so speak up and share them below.

Speak Up: How Do Your Friends Distract You From Working Out?

There are only a couple of friends that I like to work out with because I know they like to work hard. Then there are others who'll go to the gym with me and would rather chitchat about their annoying boss or insensitive boyfriend, or how their dog chewed their favorite purse. I'm not saying I don't want to talk to my friends, but there's a time and a place for everything. Since I'm a working mom, I don't have a ton of extra time in my schedule, so I don't appreciate being distracted from my workouts.

How about you? How do your friends prevent you from getting in a good workout?

Speak Up: How Would You Spend $1000 to Get Beach-Ready?

Wouldn't it be great to have a fitness budget? It would be great and that is why I am giving away big bucks to help some lucky winner get ready for the beach. Imagine, if you will, that you had $1000 to spend on getting healthy, fit and beach-body ready. I know how I would spend it: I'd start with a mixture of Pilates privates and personal training sessions. I'd meet with a dietitian to maximize my energy and metabolism. I'd invest in some new sneakers and some home fitness equipment. Or I would go to this awesome bikini boot camp.

But that's me. I want to know how you would spend it. Tell me in the comments section below.

Don't forget to log in and take the quiz to enter my giveaway contest to win $1000 to get beach-body ready.

Speak Up: What's Your Crazy PMS Craving?

Recently I asked you about your favorite healthy snacks, and I was happy to see so many of you respond. Personally, I try hard to eat healthy most of the time, but when PMS strikes, it's hard for me to stay on track. I end up craving everything sweet and salty.

So now I want to know about your fattening, greasy, creamy, fried, sugar-coated, chocolate-covered PMS cravings. What foods call your name when it's that time of the month? Tell me in the comment section below.

Speak Up: What Do You Say to Yourself for Workout Motivation

Does this happen to you? You're working out and going through the motions, and though your heart rate is entering your target zone you feel like stopping. You just want to walk away from whatever you're doing and lie down. At these times, it is useful to have a little voice in your head inspiring you to keep on keeping on. To run, not walk. To complete that last set of hamstring curls on the exercise ball. I call that voice the "inner coach" and I tell myself I can do this for 5 more minutes. Just five more minutes! Sometimes I hear Ice Cube rapping, "Life is not a track meet, it's a marathon." That keeps me moving too.

I am wondering what your "inner coach" (quite the opposite of an "inner child") says to you to inspire you to keep going. Tell me in the comments section below.

Speak Up: If You Found Out You Were Allergic to Your Pet . . .

You feel miserable. You're sneezing, blowing your nose constantly, and your eyes feel so itchy that you can hardly open them. You're congested, wheezing, and having a hard time breathing. You think you're developing seasonal allergies to the flowers beginning to bloom, but when you go to your doctor, you find out you're actually allergic to the kitty you've had for five years. It's horrible news, but at least you know what's making you feel so crummy.

So, what would you do if you found out you were suddenly allergic to your pet?

Speak Up: Do Mom's Body Image Comments Matter?

Denise Richards recently told Shape Magazine that she'd never talk about weight around her two young daughters. Furthermore she said, "And they'll never hear me say, 'Mommy's feeling fat today.' That kind of attitude just makes young girls grow up to be dissatisfied with their bodies." And while I can't say I agree with Denise subjecting her daughters to be on her new reality show, it seems as if she's definitely got the body image thing right. I totally agree with her on keeping her, "Do I look fat?" comments to herself. Daughters will mimic their mother's actions right down to asking if they look fat in their pull-ups, which could lead to their own body image issues down the road.

As always I am curious about you guys. Did your mother talk about her own body image issues in front of you when you were growing up? Did it affect you at all? Further more, if you have kids, do you talk about your own body image issues in front of them and do you see it affecting them at all? So speak up and share your comments below.

Speak Up: What's Your Greatest Temptation and How Do You Avoid It?

Yes, Thin Mints are my weakness, and actually anything made or coated with chocolate, I just can't resist. I don't think there's anything wrong with giving into your temptations and enjoying a few tasty bites. However, if I ate too much chocolate all the time I'd feel pretty crappy (and end up gaining a few extra pounds), so that totally helps to curb my cravings. Here is the thing: I'm human and if chocolate is in front of me, it can be tough to pass up. So I try to avoid temptations by only buying chocolate in bite-size pieces (instead of huge bars). Since I love to bake with chocolate, I also try to make cookies and treats for occasions or when I'm having people over. That way I can enjoy a cookie (or three), and share the rest.

So speak up and tell me, what do you crave the most and how do you stay strong in the face of temptation?
