Chocolate That's Good For Your Teeth? Sweet!

Chocolate is one of those foods I always save room for. Not only is it the perfect way to end a meal, but it also has health benefits such as the ability to lower blood pressure and soothe coughs. One problem with chocolate, aside from it being high in calories, is that one of its main ingredients is sugar, so it's not good for your teeth. This problem is being eradicated by two European companies, Barry Callebaut and Smet, who have created the first-ever chocolate that won't cause cavities. That's right. It doesn't cause tooth decay because it's made with a different type of sugar called isomaltulose, which doesn't cause an increase in acidity in the mouth, which can lead to tooth decay. This dentist-friendly chocolate has even been approved by Tooth Friendly International, a nonprofit organization which works to improve oral health.

You Asked: I Thought Chocolate Was Good For You?

A recent post on curing chocolate cravings with a brisk walk left one Sugar user a bit confused. So I wanted to clarify a few things about dark chocolate's new status as a health food. She asked:

But I thought dark chocolate was good for your health, so wouldn't you not want to reduce your craving at least for dark chocolate?
— Pinkzvm

Let me just begin by stating my deep love for dark chocolate. I appreciate that it is satisfying in such small amounts because even though dark chocolate is high in flavonoid antioxidants, it is still a high-calorie food. Two to four small pieces of dark chocolate offer a similar amount of antioxidants as many fruits and veggies, but with more than double to triple the caloric load. Chocolate is also lacking many other benefits found in produce, like fiber, and it contains considerably more fat, especially saturated fat, than say broccoli or an apple.

To learn what happens to chocolate as it is processed,

Walk Away From Your Chocolate Craving

If you crave chocolate intensely, know that you are not alone. Considered the most commonly craved food, chocolate now has a new proven adversary — walking. A recent British study involving a small number of chocoholics found that the simple act of walking reduced cravings for this cocoa derived delight. Walking briskly for 15 minutes not only reduced the blood pressure of study participants, but it reduced their cravings as well.

Next time you are craving chocolate, take yourself for a walk. I think this little trick might just work with any craving. Test it out and see.

Adora: A Better Calcium Supplement

When I suggested that chocolate-flavored calcium supplements make a good substitute for dessert, many of you weren't so into the high-fructose corn syrup that comes with most calcium chews. But I'm still concerned about my daily calcium intake, and I still like a sweet bite after meals, so I was excited to discover Adora Calcium Supplements ($6 for a 30-piece bag).

These dark-chocolate supplements are free of corn syrup, as well as gluten, artificial sweeteners, and other weird stuff. In fact, the only thing on the ingredient list that wasn't all natural or a vitamin was soy lecithin.

The individually wrapped candies are sizable and tasty enough to satisfy chocoholics. Though they're not exactly Scharffen Berger, they do taste unvitaminy — actually a lot like Hershey's Special Dark. You can buy a bag here for $6. Have you ever tried Adora? Do you think you will?

Calorie Counts on Chocolate: Cool or Not?

A new concept has taken this idea literally by actually printing the calorie count right onto the chocolate bar, which means you'll see how many calories you're eating with each piece you break off. The idea is just that, an idea, and not yet available for purchase but it's still fascinating to think about. Me, I am not sure I'd want to know exactly how much each bite was costing me — seems to take the fun out of splurging on chocolate. Nonetheless, it's a cool idea.
What's Soy Lecithin Doing in My Chocolate?

Well, I'm also addicted, but that's beside the point. I was checking out the label of a bar I picked up and noticed soy lecithin in the list of ingredients. Is it something I should avoid? To find out

The Dark Side of Chocolate

I have reported all the good news on chocolate: it is full of heart protecting flavonoids, it lowers blood pressure, and it increases blood flow. I reported the good news, so it is only fair that I share with you the bad news as well. Unfortunately, its reputation as the new healthy food is being called into question.

A top Medical Journal says that many of the health claims are misleading. While it is true that plain chocolate is high in antioxidants, these plant chemicals also impart the chocolate with a bitter taste and are often removed during the manufacturing process. With the flavonoids removed, chocolate is just a decadent treat<a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=17638056&ft=1&f=1066"high in sugar and fat. The majority of chocolatiers do not list the antioxidant content of their chocolate. So, once again I remind you. Chocolate may or not may not be beneficial to your health, so please enjoy it in moderation.

Another Reason to Eat Chocolate: Increased Blood Flow

I never used to like chocolate as a child, but now I can't live without it. Just a small piece is enough to satisfy my sugar cravings. Plus I feel good eating it, knowing that flavenoid-rich dark chocolate has health benefits like lowering blood pressure, and now a new study shows that it can also increase coronary blood flow.

This study involved a two-week trial and monitored 39 adults (average age 29). Study participants either ate 550 mg a day of dark chocolate or white chocolate. The CFVR (coronary flow velocity reserve) of all the participants was monitored. The CFVR indicates the ability of the coronary arteries to dilate and allow more blood flow, which is a good thing.

The study found that in as little as two weeks, those who ate flavenoid-rich dark chocolate had improved heart function and blood flow, as compared to those who just ate white chocolate. I love foods that taste good and are also good for you, so go ahead and indulge, for your heart's sake.

Another Reason to Eat Chocolate: It Soothes a Cough

You know me; I am always looking for another reason to eat more dark chocolate. From lowering blood pressure to having a load of antioxidants to just tasting so darn good, there is yet another reason to eat chocolate. Hooray!

Research has found that theobromine, an ingredient found in chocolate, has a cough-reducing effect superior to codeine, an ingredient found in many cough syrups. What's more? Chocolate, as we all know by now, soothes and moistens the throat.

As a matter of fact, I think I feel a little cough coming on right now. Looks like I'm going to be forced to eat some dark chocolate — twist my arm already, jeez. I think I will go make some hot cocoa now!

Equal Exchange Organic Chocolate Bars

While shopping the other day, I had the hankering for chocolate and I came across Equal Exchange Organic Chocolate bars. Equal Exchange guarantees small farmers a fair price and a long-term relationship so they can stay in business, unlike many conventional cocoa bean manufacturers where small farmers and laborers receive only a small fraction of the profit. I call it chocolate with a conscience and I like to put my money where my mouth is - ya know.

Equal Exchange works with small farming cooperatives in the Dominican Republic and Peru, who cultivate the cocoa using environmentally sustainable methods. By choosing Equal Exchange fairly traded products, you help provide small farmers the resources and opportunities they need to produce excellent quality cocoa, as well as a better quality life for their families and communities.

So you like the companies business practices, but how does the chocolate rate? If you are curious then

Really Dark Chocolate: Dolfin

You all may have figured out by now that I am a bit of a chocolate fiend -- I love that stuff. This is why I get so excited when I read news about the health benefits of chocolate. The recent discovery that dark chocolate may actually lower your blood pressure has really got me on a chocolate roll.

I wanted to share my latest discovery -- Right now I am loving Dolfin Chocolate Noir Extra Bitter ($3.49) because it is 88 percent cocoa and so yummy. Plus due to its richness, 30 calories (the amount you should eat daily to get the blood pressure lowering benefits) it is actually quite fulfilling. What's more? Well, since it has such a high percentage of cocoa you're also getting some antioxidants too! Buy some from WorldWideChocolate.com.

Yum!

With chocolate making headlines, I thought I should share this amazing sorbet recipe...Once you taste this you will be amazed that there is no cream in it. It is just pure chocolate goodness. Now, chocolate and sorbet may not be categorized as health food, but this is definitely a great alternative to many frozen desserts out there. Plus, the flavor is so intense and satisfying you really only need half a scoop to cure your chocolate craving.

If you don't believe me, make if for yourself and see. It is a chocolate lover's summertime dream.

Chocolate Sorbet
from Epicurious and The Perfect Scoop

What You Need
2 1/4 cups (555 ml) water
1 cup (200 g) sugar
3/4 cup (75 g) unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
Pinch of salt
6 ounces (170 g) bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

What You Do

In a large saucepan, whisk together 1 1/2 cups (375 ml) of the water with the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Bring to a boil, whisking frequently. Let it boil, continuing to whisk, for 45 seconds.

Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate until it's melted, then stir in the vanilla extract and the remaining 3/4 cup (180 ml) water.

Transfer the mixture to a blender and blend for 15 seconds.

Chill the mixture thoroughly (about 4 hours).

Freeze mixture in your ice cream maker according to the manufacturer's instructions. If the mixture has become too thick to pour into your machine, whisk it vigorously to thin it out. Or if you chill it in blender, just run re-blend for 5 to 10 seconds.

Print recipe with images | without images

Just so you know this is my official entry into Yum's Ice Cream Challenge - it just seemed like I should offer up a healthier frozen dessert option.

Dark Chocolate Lowers Blood Pressure

I don't know about you, but I really do love chocolate and rarely need an excuse to indulge. Since there is new research suggesting that dark chocolate (my favorite) helps lower blood pressure I might not need to rationalize my small indulgences any longer.

German scientists found that eating a tiny square of dark chocolate every night before bed, lowered blood pressure. I just want to reiterate, that it is a "tiny square" of dark chocolate, not an entire bar of chocolate. Participants in the study ate one square -- 6.3 grams and 30 calories -- of a Ritter Sport Halbbitter, which is 50 percent cacao, every day for 18 weeks. The cool thing about this new study is that participants ate regular, ol' dark chocolate not some fancy pants, scientifically distilled, flavonoid enhanced cocoa.

It is thought that chocolate lowers blood pressure when cocoa flavanols spur the release of nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow. I think it is super cool that my chocolate fix is helping to keep my blood pressure regulated. I think it is important to mention, when dealing with high blood pressure, chocolate may help but it is not the only answer. It is just one element folks can use to manage hypertension.

Low Fat Banana Bread with Chocolate, Cherries and Walnuts

I had two very large, very rotten bananas sitting on my kitchen counter. When life gives you rotten bananas you make banana bread (or smoothies, but I was in a baking mood).

I wanted to try to make a low fat version and I found this non-fat version, but since I added chocolate and it also contains nuts the entire package has some fat in it. Since the recipe is vegan it contains no butter and no eggs, it is definitely low in cholesterol.

The bread is tasty, but a little dense and a little dry. I want to toast it and smear it with butter, but that defeats the purpose doesn't it. It is great for breakfast or a snack, but I wouldn't take this banana bread to a party or give it as a gift. To occasions like those I prefer to bring something a bit more decadent.

To check out the recipe, just

Have You Heard of: Alter Eco Fair Trade

I've told you about Fair Trade, and how it's so important to support companies and businesses with the Fair Trade label. Rapunzel, Divine Chocolate, and Sweet Earth Organic Chocolates are great companies to buy from.

Just to remind you, Fair Trade means that the farmers were given a fair price for their products, so they can in turn pay their workers the proper salary. No child labor or forced labor was used when you see the Fair Trade label.

I recently discovered a new line of foods called Alter Eco Fair Trade. They offer wonderful products such as White and Red Quinoa from Bolivia, Unrefined Cane Sugar from The Philippines, Coffee from Peru, and they also have Thai, Coral, Ruby, and Purple Rice from Thailand.

Alter Eco also has many different kinds of tea such as Chai from Sri Lanka, and Darjeeling Black from India. My favorite product must be their chocolate bars. These are made using a combination of Fair Trade ingredients such as cocoa, sun-dried raisins, and roasted cashews.

When you look on the back of an Alter Eco Fair Trade package, you'll find the unique story of the farmers and the area where it was cultivated. Not only do I love knowing where my food came from, but I love buying quality products from companies who pay their workers what they deserve.

Fit's Tips: Look for Alter Eco Fair Trade products at your local health food store, or if you visit their website, their products can be bought online. They're reasonably priced for what you get, and you'll feel good supporting a conscious company.

5 Things: About Chocolate

I heart chocolate. I really, really do. Here are a few facts to ponder when eating chocolate.

Chocolate contains flavanoids, the antioxidant family that also contains the health-protective compounds resveratrol, found in grape juice, and EGCG, found in green tea. When we consume chocolate and cocoa the antioxidants in our bloodstream rise, which is a good thing.

Dutch processed cocoa, while richer in taste, contains much fewer antioxidants than natural cocoa. Dutch processed cocoa is treated with an alkali to neutralize its acids. Unfortunately, the most readily available is cocoa processed this way.

Dark chocolate is less sweet than other types of chocolate because as cocoa content goes up, sugar content drops. Dark chocolate is either bittersweet or semi sweet and contains 50-85% cocoa. Milk chocolate contains 50% cocoa.

Two to four small pieces of dark chocolate are shown in studies to increase antioxidant status for several hours, but they contain about 165 to 220 calories. Fruits and veggies with the same health benefits are generally only 25 to 80 calories.

According to studies performed by the Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the U.S. Naval Academy eating chocolate does not cause acne. Stress however does cause acne and I know I often reach for chocolate when stressed, so it looks like the chocolate is not to blame.

Fit's Tip: I think chocolate shouldn't be viewed as a replacement for fruits and vegetables since they are also high in vitamins, minerals and fiber. I think of chocolate as <strike>a necessary indulgence</strike> an indulgence with health benefits. That is why, when I eat it I really meditate on the pleasure it brings me.

Godiva = No Trans Fat!

Alright, so you've all heard the sad news about Ghirardelli chocolate containing trans fat. I'm over it now because I just found out that Godiva is trans fat free. Not only do I love their chocolate bars, but I just discovered a new reason to keep a gallon of milk in the fridge.

Godiva makes Dark Chocolate Truffle Hot Cocoa. Each canister is $10, but it's completely worth it. So creamy and decadent, it's one of the best 270 calories I've ever consumed.

Check out the nutritional info:

Serving Size: 4 Tbsp
Calories: 180 (plain powder); 270 (with 1 cup skim milk); 300 (with 1 cup 2% milk)
Fat: 4.5g
Trans fat: 0g
Sodium: 5 mg
Protein: 4g
Fiber: 6g
Carbs: 31g
Sugars: 23g

Did you see that? 4g of protein? That is as much as there is in a SOYJOY bar, but there's no question which one I'd choose. Plus 6g of fiber, and 25% of my daily iron. That's one delicious cup of cocoa you can feel good about sipping.

We all know the health benefits of eating dark chocolate but this extends into pure enjoyment.

The reasoning was this: Chocolate contains a number of substances that give 'natural highs,' including phenylethylamine, which is produced by the body when people are in love, and theobromine. I am not sure I am convinced as being covered with electrodes while being monitored by men in white lab coats (as the participants were) hardly screams romance, however I am curious what you think...

Ghirardelli: It's Gourmet With a Side of Trans Fat

I picked up a bag of one of my favorite treats last night - Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate Squares with Caramel filling. I know, they're not at all good for you, but they taste amazing.

Since they are a popular brand of gourmet chocolate, it didn't even occur to me to check the label. Maybe I should have a long time ago because once I saw the dreaded words - partially hydrogenated vegetable oil - I just about had a sugar crash.

WTF!! I am NOT happy about this. Why can't manufacturers just stop putting this crap in our food? At least you have to eat 3 whole squares in order to get just .5g of trans fat, but still - I'm trying to avoid this stuff altogether.

Fit's Tips: Learn from my mistake. Always read the label and check for trans fat and other unhealthy ingredients before you buy it. Remember to look for interesterified oil too. You can't just assume something is good for you just because you want it to be!

A Healthier Easter Basket

You've seen the Easter Candy breakdown. You cast your vote for your favorite Easter Candy over on YumSugar...and now you're thinking maybe I should make a healthy Easter Basket. Well you know I am going to second that option. I am going to go so far as to give you some suggestions.

Carrots - The Easter Bunny likes to share

Fresh fruit

Homemade cookies that are filled with healthy ingredients like oats, raisins, dried cranberries, walnuts, and dark chocolate chips

Bars of Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate covered peanuts, pretzels, or raisins

Mini banana bread muffins

An exercise DVD

A scented candle

Hand soap shaped like bird's eggs (my girls love these)

A jar of all fruit jam

Granola bars

A potted plant

Small picture frames

Herbal teas and a mug

A CD of relaxing music

Silly Putty - it comes in its own egg

For kids: a coloring book, colored pencils, puzzles, small toys, stuffed bunnies, stickers, play-doh, magnets, disposable cameras, packets of seeds and gardening tools, plastic eggs filled with coins, beads, and books about Easter.

Fit's Tips: I don't believe in denying yourself anything, especially during special family and holiday times. Make sure you do enjoy yourself (and the treats), and try the things you love, just don't go overboard and eat the ENTIRE 12 inch chocolate bunny in one sitting.

Echo Farm: Tasty Pudding Made by Women

Of course the pudding is made with milk that comes from female cows, but those aren't the women I'm referring to. Echo Farm is an all-women operated farm (1 of 165,102 female run farms in the U.S.)

Not only do I feel good about supporting an all female business, these women treat their cows with only the highest amount of respect and care. At their farm in Hinsdale, N.H, their cows' comfort is one of their top priorities.

Their milking cows are let out twice a day for "recess." This gives their girls a chance to get off the cement floor of the milking parlor. They are housed in stall free barns, which means the cows are not tied up and are free to roam about the barn.

They have fresh feed and water available to them at all times and are milked twice a day (once every 12 hours). Their cows are given bedded packs to sleep on, made with sawdust, that allow the animals a soft place to lay down and room to stretch out.

Echo Farm makes delicious pudding that is Kosher and Gluten Free. You can find sensational flavors that are named after their original 6 cows. Check out Miracle's Chocolate made with Ghiradelli cocoa, Lolly's Butterscotch, and Candle's Coffee Caramel. They also make Spiced Pumpkin and <a href"http://www.echofarmpuddings.com/flavors/flavors.php?ID=8">Coconut Cream pudding.

Fit's Tips: Each serving contains fresh whole milk, so it's a delicious treat that has 15-23% of your daily calcium needs. Just remember it is made with whole milk so there are 6 grams of fat per serving, but if you are craving something milky this might just be the treat.

Chocolate is Even Better for Us

OK. OK - You don't have to twist my arm. I'll eat dark chocolate already.

Recent reseach has discovered yet another health benefit of chocolate. Right On!!! Based on a study where patients consumed 8 oz of cocoa (without sugar) daily for 6 weeks, researchers found the patients had increased blood flow. Good news for your heart and your taste buds.

Cocoa and dark chocolate products are considered one of the most concentrated sources of flavenoids. Red wine, green tea, fruit, and vegetables also contain flavenoids, which are the pigments in plants that act as antioxidants.

This test does not suggest that everyone start devouring Hershey's kisses and Bon-Bons daily (darn), but it does suggest that we pay more attention to how dark chocolate and other flavenoid-rich foods might offer help to our heart and body. Who knows, maybe down the road your doctor will prescribe heart medication made out of cocoa.

The antioxidants in dark chocolate can also lower your blood pressure and your cholesterol. So if you're a chocoholic, make sure you're consuming the dark stuff. It has a higher percentage of cocoa than milk-chocolate.

Augustus Gloop knew this all along. No wonder he took a dip in Willy Wonka's chocolate river. Knowing what I know now about the health benefits of chocolate, I would too.

St. Patrick's Day Tea: Green and Healthy

This St. Patty's Day, if green beer is not in your diet (or even just not for you) then this festive tea may be worth a try.

Blended with Green Peppermint, Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips and Green Rooibos, this St. Patrick's Day Tea is one healthy (and green) drink. What makes it so healthy? Why, the peppermint and the rooibos, of course.

Peppermint tea has been thought to have healing effects, as a result of the menthol that it contains. It may ease irritable bowel syndrome, nausea and vomiting. It can also control mild asthma and even help to manage stress. Some even drink peppermint tea as a way to ward off colds.

Rooibos, a South African plant, has gained much attention for the relief of nervous tension, various digestive problems and allergies. Interestingly enough, in South Africa, the drink of choice for expectant mothers is rooibos tea because this caffeine-free herbal infusion has been shown to soothe the body's reaction to allergies and rashes. Most recently, antioxidant activity has also been attributed to the tea as well.

As for the chocolate, well do I even need I explain why that's good? Buy it from TeaGarden.com for $13.50 (3.5 ounces).

Carob Conundrum

It looks a lot like chocolate, but I can tell you right now, it doesn't compare to the amazingly decadent taste of chocolate.

5 Things: About Caffeine

I love, need, am addicted to my cup of morning coffee. I follow it with a slow and steady stream of green tea through the rest of my day. Recently I became curious about this substance, stimulant, and drug and here are a few things I learned.

It is believed that caffeine blocks the brains uptake of the chemical adenosine that causes drowsiness by slowing down nerve cell activity. That is how it gives you so much pep.

Dark chocolate has about 3 times as much caffeine as milk chocolate.

The body absorbs caffeine through the stomach and intestine, and peak blood levels occur about 45 - 60 minutes after ingestion.

Only 50 percent of regular caffeine users experience withdrawal symptoms like headache or drowsiness. No one knows why.

Caffeine can enhance performance in endurance sports, especially for activities lasting longer than an hour.

Endangered Species Chocolate

Endangered Species Chocolate isn't only sweet treats with cute animals on the packaging. Nope. They donate 10 percent of their net profits to support organizations involved in the conservation of species, habitat and humanity. This chocolate company believes all life is precious and deserves respect, kindness, and care. This Reverence for Life ethic is at the heart of their business practices.

They use cocoa that is 100 percent ethically traded. Grown in forests in Nigeria, the farmers determine a fair price for their cocoa crops. By buying Endangered Species chocolate, you support sustainable forest farmland and the species that flourish there.

Now let's get to the chocolate. They make 3 oz bars, named after different endangered animals. My favorites are the sea turtle bar, made with dark chocolate and dried blueberries, and the wolf bar, made with dark chocolate, dried cranberries, and almonds.

They also have amazing milk chocolate like the dolphin bar made with dried cherries. If you're a white chocolate fan, they make the polar bear bar made with macadamia nuts. For something different, try the Eco Rounds, yum!

Their chocolate is really reasonably priced too. Look for it in your local health food store. You'll feel good knowing you're treating yourself while helping to support the world and its creatures.

Chocolate Bath - Deliciously Relaxing

Do you like chocolate? Well you're soaking in it...ahhh doesn't that sound nice - a chocolate bath.

A Japanese spa in Hakone offers them. Incorporating chocolate into natural hot springs, the bath contains cacao extract and trehalose, a kind of natural sugar. These ingredients promote beautiful skin by trapping the moisture.

For the rest of us, there are hot chocolate bath salts. They're also available in white chocolate, for only $9.00.

Of course, baths in general are very soothing and relaxing. And there are health benefits and happiness associated with chocolate. I never would have thought to put the two together - but I bet some of you have!

Spending time in the enveloping warmth and the delicious aroma of chocolate must have an amazingly calming effect.

Not a Puzzle to Me: Jigsaw Health Bars

If you have been reading FitSugar, then you already know that I am a bit of a health/protein bar fanatic. I wouldn't say I am picky, but bars are so hit and miss when it comes to taste and it's just too hard to tell from the packaging. Energy bars can be tasteless -- Apparently it's just not easy making a quick, healthy bar taste good.

Jigsaw ($2.97/bar) goes beyond that as they believe you shouldn’t be satisfied with health bars tasting just “good". Well after twenty-two versions, they think they've got it perfect... all the nutrients you need, none of the sugar found in other bars (they are sweetened with sugar alcohol) and a delicious taste. I am even more impressed with their 100% full-refund satisfaction guarantee, which shows that they stand behind their product.

Tested by me and my picky (and sensitive to texture) taste buds, I can honestly tell you the bars are good and I'll even go as far to say that the coconut almond bar is downright tasty.

What's more? Jigsaw Bars Contain No Gluten, Lactose, Soy Protein, or Casein but they do contain Meg-3 (omega-3 essential fatty acids sourced from fish) and OptiNutrin (immune-enhancing glyconutrients from mushrooms). All good to hear.

You can buy them directly from the Jigsaw site. Guess what else? Since FitSugar readers are so special, Jigsaw would like to offer you all $5.00 off your first purchase online! Just enter the code FitSugar at checkout! Enjoy!

I "Heart" Chocolate: CocoaVia Bars

Are you a little bummed because you would love to get the benefits of chocolate but you just don't dig the bitter taste of dark chocolate? Fret no more...

We have all been told the darker the better the chocolate when it comes to heart health. The truth is it's really not about dark vs. milk chocolate. Heart health benefits are not totally related to type of chocolate, it's the amount of cocoa flavanols that counts, and that's determined by how the cocoa is processed. The makers of CocoaVia ($4.99/5 pack) chocolate bars guarantee high flavanol levels through their patented process. Additionally, CocoaVia contains plant sterols which are proven to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. The best part? The choice is yours: dark chocolate or milk chocolate. Whichever taste you prefer -- They're all yummy and you get the same benefits and with only 110 calories per bar, you won't be breaking your diet either.

Look for CocoaVia in grocery and drug stores near you or buy directly online from Walgreens.com.

Alert Energy Ballz

Once again, Yum has come through giving me quite the treat from the Fancy Food Show in San Francisco. One reoccurring theme in the show was energy -- People want more of it and they want it pop-able.

Enter Alert Energy Ballz ($60 for 60 ballz per box, 2 ballz per sack). I will admit, at first I was very hesitant but after reading the ingredients (oat flour, honey, chocolate, cinnamon among other stuff) and seeing that one ball has only 38 calories, I figured they're not as bad as an energy supplement could be, so I gave it a try.

I was pleasantly surprised with the taste and I will assure you that I definitely felt a surge of energy but it was not the jittery-I-need-more type of energy. Each ball has 40 mg of caffeine from Gurana Extract (just to give you a comparison, coffee has 47-164 mg per 5 ounce serving) so it packs a natural kick.

Other good stuff in the ballz: Whey Protein, Taurine, Ginseng, B Vitamins, Vitamin C and a decent amount of dietary fiber for such a little ball. To order some online, visit FunEnergyFoods.com.

Fit's Tip: Ballz are great for a pick me up once in a while, but if you're feeling a real lack in energy then you should really re-evaluate your diet and exercise to find the problem rather than relying on a supplement.

Everyday Nutrition Shakes

Dr. Jana Klauer, author of the new book How the Rich Get Thin: Park Avenue's Top Diet Doctor Reveals the Secrets to Losing Weight and Feeling Great has created ready-to-drink Everyday Nutrition shakes.

Everyday Nutrition shakes are supposed to be a tool for weight loss because they contain high quality whey protein and calcium - two proven ingredients for weight loss and with only 180 calories, 20 grams of protein and 400 mg of calcium, the 11 ounce drink packs a powerful punch. One reason why I actually like this product is because the shakes contain omega-3 fatty acids which has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and depression. The shakes are available in rich (no pun intended) cocoa and vanilla bean.

I am also pleased that the shakes do not contain artificial appetite suppressants, which is common in 'diet' shakes. Dr. Klauer's site says, "Everyday Nutrition shakes will supply nutrients your body needs to lose weight safely and efficiently, but they are not designed to replace food entirely." Giving the shakes another bonus point in my book.

Sounds like something you want to try? Buy the shakes from Janeklauermd.com, but buyer beware: These shakes are not your typical protein shake as a pack of 24 will set you back $114.00.

I guess if you live on Park Avenue, $114 is just a drop in the hat.

Dr. Oetker Knows Brownies

The other day I had a craving for boxed brownies, like my mom used to make.

I know the Duncan Hines I grew up with is so very tasty, but it isn't exactly healthy - it's completely processed and made with white flour and white sugar. So I checked to see if I could find a healthier version at the health food store.

I picked up a box of Dr. Oetker's Organic Brownie Mix. I was skeptical about how they would taste, and positive they wouldn't look anything like the gorgeous picture on the front of the box.

All you had to do was add 2 eggs and a 1/4 cup of butter (I substituted Canola oil). I also took it upon myself to add some walnuts and white chocolate chips.

I have to say, they were pretty darn tasty - Lightly crispy on the edges, and moist and chewy on the inside. I wouldn't compare them to my mother's Duncan Hines brownies, but they were definitely not at all flat and tasteless like No Pudge Brownie Mix.

I'm going to keep a box of Dr. Oetker's brownie mix on hand in case of a chocolate emergency. But if time allows for it, I'd definitely recommend making them from scratch instead.

PMS and FOOD!!!!

What do potato chips and chocolate have in common, other than both being super tasty? They are the top two foods women crave when experiencing bouts of PMS. According to research the cravings have nothing to do with nutrient deficiencies, but rather with brain chemistry.

According to Judith Wurtman, Ph.D., a research scientist at MIT,

It's a brain deficiency. It's a real phenomenon, provoked by changes in the brain when one's hormones are changing. The one chemical that drives all of this is serotonin. One way you can make serotonin is by eating carbohydrates. But you don't have to eat chocolate or potato chips to do that any more than you need to drink champagne to satisfy your thirst.

So we reach for high-fat or sweet foods because they're a quick way to raise serotonin and endorphin levels, but complex carbohydrates will do the same thing and do it better. Since complex carbohydrates are not metabolized as quickly, you won't experience a drastic drop in blood sugars. In fact, mixing complex carbs with a little fat is the best, since the fat slows down the digestion process even more and will cut the craving.

Fit's Tip: Try a rice cake with almond butter next time you are experiencing that crazy PMS craving. If you need to, you can sprinkle a few chocolate chips on top, but think of them as garnish - not the main course.

If you haven't already, be sure to vote on "What Is Your Crazy PMS Craving?".

Omega Chocolate Truffles

Always forgetting to take your supplements? Me too. But it's a rare day when I forget dessert.

Now you can kill two birds with one stone. Flora makes Bija Omega Truffles, which are made with a rich blend of premium organic ingredients and 8 grams of omega-3 & omega-6 fatty acids (the good ones).

There is increasing evidence that chocolate contains surprising amounts of minerals, potent antioxidants and other phytonutrients. And adding healthy fats to your diet can help reduce your cholesterol and your risk of coronary disease.

Dessert that's good for you? Count me in. They're available in three mouthwatering flavors: Dark Chocolate, Milk Chocolate Hazelnut, and White Maple.

Each package comes with four truffles so you can really indulge and feel good doing it. Look for them in the cooler at your favorite natural food store.

Shockolate Vault

Ok so maybe this holiday season proves to be far too tempting for your own good. It's hard to resist the abundances of flowing candy all season long. If you fall into the extreme case of having zero control, you may want to start using shock therapy.

Yup, shock therapy. The Shockolate Vault ($14.95) works like this: Pop your favorite chocolates, candies, drugs (...whatever tempts you most) inside the jar, set the timer and the countdown begins. If anyone attempts to get to the jar's contents before the timer reaches zero the lid will emit a nasty but harmless electric shock. Ouch!

If this sounds like something you could use, then buy it on Firebox.com.

This brings a whole new meaning to extreme times call for extreme measures.

Health Roadblock: PMS

Lots of times we can be doing just great on a health kick and then WHAM, it's that time of the month and all you can think about is chocolate.

What's a health conscious girl to do when she is seriously PMS'ing? Try feeding your sweet tooth, but not with an entire fun bag size of Snickers, with something that tricks your body into thinking it's still being bad. Go for a banana filled with peanut butter or chocolate syrup. For me, chocolate dipped strawberries always do the trick. This way you're still getting the sweets but without all of the calories and fat that come from candy bars and cake. Plus, you're getting the added nutritional value from the fruit.

Fit's Tip: For an even better version, dip the fruit in dark chocolate that is at least 60% cocoa.

Dark Chocolate, Yummy in the Tummy!

This could be the best news you've heard all day.

Longevity specialist Dr. Michael Roizen was on Oprah a while back telling us all to eat more chocolate to increase longevity. Why? Well, dark chocolate (look for at least 60 percent cocoa) is a concentrated source of antioxidants, which protect cells from age-related damage. In fact, a 1 1/2-ounce square of chocolate may have as many cancer-fighting antioxidants as a five-ounce glass of red wine. (Wine and chocolate, can't get any better than that!) Only dark chocolate will do, but if you eat one ounce every day, you increase the level of healthy fat in your diet. What's more? The European Board of Health lists chocolate as a pre-digestive aid. So goodbye to the saying, "You'll spoil your dinner."

For Fit's pick for the best dark chocolate,
