What Shoes Do You Wear When You Strength Train?

While attending their Women's Media Summit, I learned that Nike wants you to think about your workout shoes. This may not surprise you since they are, after all, in the business of selling shoes.

When working out, most of us lift weights and strength train in our running shoes; I know I do. But running shoes are technically made for running — just front to back motion. Strength training happens in all three planes of motion: front to back, side to side, and rotation. And our running shoes just don't support that variety of motion. While shoes specific for "training" seem a little excessive, like a marketing ploy, I see Nike's point.

What I want to know is . . .

Source

Soles 4 Souls: Donate Your Used Sneakers

If you're like me, you own a few pairs of athletic shoes for all your exercise needs. I have a pair for running outside on pavement, a pair for running in the woods, and a pair for tennis. When I buy a new pair of sneakers, I always hold onto the old pair "just in case." It's always good to have a back-up pair, right? Well you may feel differently when you think of the millions of people around the world who can't even afford one pair of sneakers. You can help by donating your old sneaks to an organization called Soles 4 Souls.

I know I retire a pair of running sneaks after I've clocked 350 to 500 miles, but the pair I wear on the treadmill hardly looks worn. If you have gently used sneaks like these, you can mail them to one of these locations.

Fit's Tip: Before sending along your lonely pair, why not compile a collection from your friends, family, and fellow exercisers? I even saw a donation box at my gym recently, so ask at your gym and see if you can set one up, too.

Best Sneakers for Long Distance Running

If you're upping your running mileage to tone up, to cross-train for another endurance sport, or if you're training for a marathon, then you're going to need a quality pair of sneakers. There isn't one brand or style of running shoe out there that is considered the ultimate shoe, because everyone's feet are different and so is the way in which they run. Here's some criteria you should look for in a shoe:

The sneaker should be lightweight and breathable. After continuously pounding your feet on the ground for almost an hour, you want as little weight on your feet as possible to avoid injuries to your joints and to conserve energy. Running for long periods of time will also raise your body temperature, so you want a shoe that has some type of ventilation (sweaty feet can cause blisters).

The sneaker should be made for your type of foot. Flat-footed people who overpronate when they run need extra arch support. If you have high arches and underpronate, you'll need extra cushioning. If you're not sure what type of foot you have and where you fall on the pronation scale, go to a specialty running store for expert advice.

For more great tips

Running Tip: If You Love Your Sneakers, Buy a Second Pair

Finding the perfect pair of sneakers is no easy task. If you're like me, you have to try on a bazillion running shoes to find the pair that fits you like Cinderella's glass slipper.

So when you unearth those unbelievably made-for-you sneaks, just buy a second pair. That way you can run in the first pair, and when it's time to give them a rest, you'll have another perfect pair waiting for you. This is especially helpful if you're training for a big race. If you feel weird about having two of the exact same looking pairs, then buy the sneakers you love in two different colors, like these Nike Air Zoom Vomero+2 shoes. They'll seem new and different to your eyes, but your feet won't notice the difference.

ACTivism: One World Running

Running shoes are not cheap no matter who you are, but for some people they're simply unattainable.

Donate new, gently worn sneakers, and worn sneakers to One World Running — an international nonprofit program promoting an awareness of health, fitness, and nutrition by providing running shoes to those in need in the United States and around the world. They will take your new or gently worn sneakers and send them overseas to someone who needs them. The shoes that are a little more loved (aka beat up and not suitable for shipment) are sent to Nike to be ground up and made into running tracks and playgrounds through the Reuse-a-Shoe program.

Regardless, you know your shoes will be in good hands, and feet. Send all your sneakers to:
One World Running
958 Cherry Vale Rd.
Boulder, CO 80303

Source

That's not a very long time if you're a regular runner. Running shoes can be pricey, especially if you're replacing them every 4 months. So when a sale comes along, I like to let you guys know about it.

Back on Track: Check Your Sneaks

After a three-day weekend, possibly full of splurges, you want to get back on track, and let's start from the bottom up. How are your sneakers treating your feet? You should replace your running shoes every 350 to 500 miles, and you might be due. Tally up your weekly miles, multiply them by the number of weeks you have had your shoes. If you tend to forget the purchase date of your shoes, and really who has space in their brain for details like that, remember to write the purchase date on the inside of the tongue next time you buy new sneakers.

Also, take a moment and try the twist test to determine if your sneakers are shot or if they are still absorbing shock for you. If you can easily twist your shoe, their mid soles are worn out and it is time for new ones.

If your shoes failed the twist test, visit ShopStyle and start checking out some new styles.

What's the Deal With Pronation?

"Pronation" may sound like a country inhabited entirely by paid athletes, but it's actually a concept that all amateur runners need to understand. The word refers to the way your foot rolls as it hits the ground, and understanding your pronation type is crucial when choosing a pair of running shoes.

Are you an overpronator or an underpronator? And why does it matter? To find out,

5 Things: Breaking in New Sneaks

Spring always inspires me to buy new fitness gear, so if you're like me, you probably picked up a new pair of sneakers. Here are some things to keep in mind when breaking them in.

Buy a new pair before your old ones start to fall apart. That way if you start to feel pain or a blister coming on, you can switch back to the pair you know and love. Continue alternating between your old and new sneakers until you gradually make the switch over to your new ones.

Start off with some lower impact activities to give your sneakers a chance to stretch out and mold to your feet. Don't just slip them on and continue with your regular running routine. Walk in them for while and then start running short distances. Gradually work your way up to longer runs.

Break in your new sneaks on the terrain you normally work out on. That means if you only run on a treadmill, break them in on a treadmill.

Always wear the same kinds of socks you'll be running in while breaking them in.

Be patient and keep in mind that it may take a month of workouts to get your sneakers to shape to your feet.

Fit Tip: On the inside of your sneaks, in permanent marker, write down the date you started wearing your new sneaks, so you'll know when it's time to buy some new ones.

How to Get the Most Wear Out of Your Sneakers

I know Earth Day was last week but that does not mean you need to stop being green. The thing with sneakers is that not only are they expensive, but in order to get the most out of them you should get a new pair every few months. That's a lot of sneakers in landfills. Brooks Running gives some great tips on how to get the most out of your sneakers. Some of these you may already do, and some you may not have thought of. They are:

Phase One: Your brand-new running shoes
First, enjoy your brand-new running shoes for 300 miles of pure running joy. Use their cushioning and resiliency to give you the perfect ride as you run day after day.

Phase Two: Transition to casual street shoes
Once they pass the 300-mile mark, those trusty running shoes make great casual street-wear. Pair them with jeans for a trip to the grocery store, an outing with your dog, or a day at the park.

There are more great ideas so

Favorite Excuse Not to Run: I Get Blisters

Now that Spring is really here, you probably see tons of people running outside. Maybe you tried it but ended up with awful blisters on your feet, so you threw in the towel. I am here to tell you that there are many ways to prevent blisters and keep your feet comfortable. Give these a try, and then give running another chance.

First, think about how old your sneaks are. Is it time for a new pair? If it is, choose ones that fit well. Different brands and styles cater to wide/narrow feet and high/low arches. There should be about 1/2 inch between your longest toe and the tip of your shoe. Make sure you can wiggle your toes freely, and your heel shouldn't slip when you walk. Also choose ones based on the activity you plan on doing. If you'll be running on pavement, don't buy the trail runners.

Spend some time breaking in your new pair. Go on short walks and runs, and then gradually build your time up.

Get yourself a few pairs of thin wicking socks (not cotton). When your feet sweat and stay wet, your skin will get soft and that's how blisters can form. Wear these socks when you go to pick out your new sneaks.

Keep your feet as dry as possible. Avoid running in puddles, and if you like to pour water over your head on a hot day, try leaning over so it doesn't drip into your shoes.

Want to know what else you can do to prevent blisters? Then

Get in Gear: New Balance Waterproof Sneakers

Now that the weather is warming up, I bet a lot of you are getting psyched to walk and run outside. The problem is most of the country is dealing with melting snow, so it's still pretty wet outside. It's no fun to run outside and get soggy feet, so if you're looking for a pair of waterproof sneaks, check out these from New Balance ($120).

To hear more about them <!-break-->

I think these are super cute, but what tops their good looks is they are made from Gore-Tex so they're completely waterproof. Your feet will stay dry and if you happen to get them covered in mud, they'll clean up easily. Plus, Gore-Tex breathes. And check out the soles. They're perfect for running around on uneven terrain. Plus the midsole is made out of shock absorbing material, so if you're into trail running, these will protect your feet from sharp rocks and sticks. In case you were wondering, the New Balance 1110 only come in the blue and gray color that's shown.

Your Feet Are Trying to Tell You Something

If you've ever purchased a pair of running shoes then you know that there is a lot of talk about your arches and pronation and it can all be very confusing. I came across this great illustration from Outside magazine that simplifies looking at your arches and using that info to buy proper running shoes. If you've ever wondered what kind of shoe fits your arch then here are some tips:

Motion-Control Shoe: You have flat arches and probably pronate heavily (roll your foot inward) when you stride. You need a shoe with severe pronation control.

Stability Shoe: You have a normal arch. You probably pronate slightly (roll your foot inward when you stride). You should look for a shoe with light or moderate pronation control.

Neutral/Cushioning Shoe: You have high arches. You probably don't roll your foot when you run. If anything, you underpronate (roll outward). You should look for a soft, shock-absorbing shoe.

If you're not sure what your arch looks like, wet your bare foot and step onto a piece of paper or pavement to get your footprint.

Source

Fit Tip: Keep Sneakers at Work

If you are desk bound all day, taking a break from work is absolutely essential. Even if you can only get up and walk around for ten minutes, it's better than nothing. You'll be more likely to take a walking break if you keep a pair of sneakers with you at work. This bypasses the excuse that you can't speed walk in stilettos. Just slip on your sneaks, get out of the office, and give your brain and body a break.

Fit's Tip: Just because these aren't the sneakers you normally exercise in, doesn't mean you should keep an old beat-up pair at the office. Old sneaks can cause foot and back pain, so make sure your work pair is supportive and comfortable. If you're not sure, then give them the twist test.

Get in Gear: Newton Running Shoes

Looking for a cool new pair of sneakers to get you moving well into 2008?

Newton Running shoes were developed to make your feet think they're barefoot and therefore increase your performance. The sole of the Newton mimics your own, allowing your foot to move freely and promote a forefoot impact that many running experts feel is a safer way to run. This happens because the shoes have protruding treads under the balls of your feet that catch first as your foot lands while running, which means you should land and push off from the designed spot. Fancy new shoes don't come cheap however, one pair starts at $155 — buyer beware as these sneaks can feel a little awkward at first and may take some time to get used to. Check them out and buy them online here.

I so wonder how these compare with MBTs, which are also designed to mimic barefoot motion. MBTs are not for running though; so let me know in the comments section below if you have tried these Newton shoes.

Fittingly Mad: "We Don't Have Room For Your Sneakers."

Over Thanksgiving I made the trip out to Philadelphia to see family. My husband convinced me that it was going to be way too cold to work out while we were there, so after much discussion and hesitation, I ditched my sneakers. Keep in mind that I bring my sneakers almost everywhere, but I let my hubby win this battle. He reminded me that since we were staying at a relative's house, it was not like I would have the option to hit up the hotel gym. I did bring some workout clothes so I could do stretches in my room, but left the sneakers at home thinking that he was right and there was no way I was going to brave the below-zero temperatures to run for one day.

Thanksgiving day comes along and I go outside for some fresh air and it is 70 degrees outside! I almost died. I would have absolutely loved to take a jog outside, especially since all the leaves were this gorgeous shade of yellow. What's even worse? Turns out that my relatives had just purchased a brand new elliptical machine for their home that I would have loved to try out. Me, I am sneakerless — awesome.

I was really very mad at my husband for being so against me bringing my sneakers and I was bummed at myself for not going with my gut. Next time, even if my husband kicks and screams about the valuable space they are taking up, my sneakers are coming along. Even if it is predicted to be freezing cold, you never know what is going to happen.

To me, being able to fit in a workout when I can is worth having to take only one scarf rather than two. Guess what is on my Christmas list from my hubby? Well Reebok Travel Trainers, of course!

Source

Get in Gear: Reebok Travel Trainers

The most annoying part about working out while traveling is lugging around all my workout gear. My running sneakers in particular take up a good bit of valuable real estate in my suitcase.

The Travel Trainer 5 Fitness Shoe ($79.99) by Reebok is a packable sneaker that allows you to take a sneaker along, while leaving the bulk behind. The shoe is made from breathable mesh and flexible synthetic upper in a technical athletic shoe style, with toe wrap over detail. There is a full lace up front, with quick pull lace loops. The best part? Tongue and heel snaps join to flatten shoe for packing. (Packing strap included.) While the Travel Trainer is not a shoe I would workout in daily, it's definitely a great option when traveling.

Buy them here.

Are Expensive Sneaks Worth It?

Picking out sneakers can be really confusing, since there are so many different kinds and they vary in price so much. Performance-wise, are expensive sneakers any better than cheaper ones? A team of Scottish scientists used high tech-methods to find out. They found no difference in comfort or shock absorbency between $80 pairs and ones that were more than $150. The bottom line? Paying more moolah doesn't mean you're getting a better shoe.

When it comes to choosing sneaks:

Choose high-quality running shoes that fit your feet. It's fine to stick with a brand you like if you've had great experiences with them, but if you're new to running and don't yet know what you like, try on a few well-known brands to see which ones fit the best.

Think about your needs. If you know you'll be running on pavement and never in the woods, then you shouldn't buy the gray trail running sneakers just because you think they look cute. Never buy workout sneakers based on looks. An adorable shoe won't help you run any faster.

Want to hear the other tips? The

Things to Think About When Buying Athletic Shoes

So you need to buy a new pair of sneakers for running, or maybe for soccer. Regardless of what activity you need the shoes for, here are some things to think about for choosing the best pair of sneakers:

Wear the appropriate shoes for the appropriate activity. If you're going to be running, it's not in your best interests to wear tennis sneakers. Even if the tennis shoe is cuter.

Get your foot measured. Our shoe sizes change over time, so make sure to have your foot measured from time to time.

Due to normal swelling in your feet throughout the day, shop for your shoes in the afternoon.

Leave the idea that you need to break a shoe in at home. If your athletic shoe does not feel comfortable in the store, don't buy it.

Shop around. There are lots of shoes to choose from and the first one you try may not always be the best even if it feels OK.

Take your own socks, the ones that you would wear with those shoes on your own.

Unfortunately, when it comes to athletic shoes you pay for what you get. So don't be afraid to pay a little extra for a nice pair of shoes.

The latest shoe? The Nike Air Native N7. What's so different about this shoe? Well, it is supposed to be the first-of-its-kind performance shoe is built on a new and unique last — a rounded oblong block used to approximate the form of the human foot — created to address the specific fit and width requirements for the Native American foot. The main purpose of the shoe is to help promote and sustain physical activity and address health issues prevalent within the Native American community. Nike didn't stop there though; profits from the sale of the Nike Air Native N7 will support "Let Me Play" programs on Native American lands that leverage sport to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

What's more? The Nike Air Native N7 also embraces Nike’s Considered design ethos, where details in the development and design of the shoe are geared to deliver sustainable innovation and reduce waste, without compromising product performance.

Wow. That's one good shoe. No word where or when it's available but I'll keep you updated.

Get in Gear: Saucony's Cool New Shoe

Ever feel like your feet get too hot and sweaty in your sneaks?

Saucony's newest and coolest (no pun intended) sneaker the ProGrid Paramount ($165) is made with a special fabric called Comfortemp, which cools and warms to maintain your feet at a pleasant 82 degrees. What's more? A climate controlled foot is a drier foot! I'd love to try them out myself, because one reason I am so quick to take my shoes off is because they are so darn hot and sweaty after a long run.

These sneaks are brand spanking new, so to find out where you can buy them near you, check out the store locator at Saucony.com.

How to Lace Your Sneaks for Running

After I buy sneakers, I tend to leave the laces just how the sales person left them. Just like keeping the factory setting. Turns out though, standard lacing may not be the best method for many people's feet. RunnersWorld.co.uk has a great "how to" on ways to lace up your running sneakers based on any issues you may have.

Here are highlights:

Problem: Wide forefoot.
Solution: Over the width of your foot just feed the laces up each side of the shoe, again using the criss-cross technique at the top.

Problem: Narrow foot.
Solution: Using the loop-lacing lock halfway up the shoe doubles the laces over your midfoot, ensuring a tight fit.

To learn to lace-up for other problems, like having your heel slip in your shoe, click here. Who knew there was a science to tying your shoes?

Where to Buy Sneakers Online: RoadRunner Sports

I have given you all many tips on how and why to buy good running shoes. Take care of your feet and they will take care of you. It seem like the good deals are often online, but when it comes to sneakers finding the right fit through the Internet can seem risky, but not with RoadRunner Sports.

They guarantee a perfect fit! Seriously. Here's how they explain their policy:

And now, with our unrivaled PERFECT FIT GUARANTEE, you can hit the road in your new running shoes. If they're not just right for you, simply exchange them within 60 days, no questions asked.

How cool is that?

They also have Fit Experts available for consultation via email or telephone (which seems charmingly "old school"). You can even sort the shoes by foot type and most shoe descriptions are accompanied by helpful reviews and rankings.

RoadRunner Sports sells other gear too: hydration systems, clothing, watches, scales, and heart rate monitors. If you prefer to shop at a retail store they have "brick and mortar" operations, mostly out west, so check their site for store locations.

5 Things: Choosing New Running Sneaks

Finding the right sneaker is kind of like finding a good boyfriend. Running shoes should be comfortable, practical, and not too flashy. Here are some tips on finding the right shoe for you.

Figure out what type of foot you have (narrow, wide, low arches, no arches, etc.) and choose a sneaker to fit your foot. Don't look at color, brand, style, or price to gauge quality or superiority. You should base your decision on how they feel (chances are you'll find a few to choose from, not just the $175 pair). Also remember not to skimp on new sneakers either. There's a reason crappy sneakers are so cheap.

<li style="width:550px;":>Think about where you'll be running and check out the material the shoe is made with. Many shoes are made with this airy mesh material so your feet don't overheat, but if you are going to be running near water, you'll want a waterproof sneak instead. Also, you may like the look of trail runners, but if you are strictly a pavement girl, you'll need a shoe that offers more cushion and support, and not such a rubbery sole.

Wear your old running shoes to the store. You'll probably be buying them at an athletic shop that's staffed with fellow runners, so have them look at your old kicks so they can gain some insight into what type of shoe may suit you best. Also wear the socks you'll be running in when trying on new sneakers.

Want to hear the rest? Then

Running: Treat Your Feet Right With Quality Sneakers

One of the reasons I love running is that it really requires no special gear. You just need a body and a desire to run. Then again, you might not need a racquet or clubs to go for a good jog, but I would suggest quality running shoes.

If you are taking up running, good quality running shoes can seriously make this habit stick. Old shoes, tennis shoes, cheap shoes often don't provide enough cushion to protect your feet, ankles, and knees which can lead to injuries and prevent you from learning to love running. Since shoes are really the only important gear needed for running, I wouldn't skimp on them. You don't need to pay out the nose for some newfangled shoe, but generally what you pay for is what you get. Expect to pay around $100. Which may sound like a lot, but can you really put a price on your knees? Plus, maybe the guilt of an expensive gear purchase will motivate you to run.

Look for a well cushioned shoe that fits your foot, matches your foot type and gait pattern. The best place to start this endeavor is a running store since they tend to employ people obsessed with running. Therefore they should be able to help you figure out your gait and point you toward the shoe for you. The American Council on Exercise recommends shoes with greater shock absorption for runners with high arches, which may make you more prone to ankle sprains. On the other hand (or foot I could say), if you have low arches look for a shoe with greater support and heel control. Here is a list of running shoes rated by the The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. It should help you figure out what brands could be good for your needs.

Fit's Tip: Buy a shoe that’s as wide as possible across the forefoot without slipping in the heel.

Get in Gear: Nike Soaker Sneakers

Sneakers that keep your feet dry are very practical, but typically they're not the most attractive of sneakers.

This is why I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the Nike Soakers ($70.00). This revolutionary women's sneaker is a unique take on the water hybrid shoe, combining a sneaker silhouette with a drainable Phylon midsole and drainage holes in the sock liner so the water runs out as fast as it comes in. The sticky rubber outsole provides supreme grip on wet surfaces. What's more? They're actually pretty cute and you won't look like you're about to embark on a summer long backpacking trip through Europe.

Need a pair? Buy them from Nike.com.

Here's a few truly pink, truly fit items Sugar users have bookmarked as Fit Finds.

10 Summer Running Essentials

Running is one of my favorite ways to burn off a few hundred calories this summer. If you're going to be going for a few runs this summer then here is a list of a few things to consider bringing along so that you can get the most out of them:

Good Sneakers/Socks

Get in Gear: FlexHold Shoe Laces

Nothing is worse than when you have finally hit the the pace and rhythm while on a jog than to look down and see that your shoe has come untied. Nine out of ten times it happens to me and it's so frustrating.

This is why I am thinking about investing in a pair of FlexHold Shoe Laces ($5.99). The innovative i|m active FlexHold Shoe Laces have ActiveHold Technology that keeps shoes tied and flexes with your foot for a comfortable fit and maximum support. This means those laces should stay put during your toughest and longest of workouts. If you're someone who uses tying your shoe laces as an excuse to take a break without anyone noticing [yup, I'm onto you], then these laces may not be for you. For everyone else, buy them from Studioim.com.

Cool or Not: Z-CoiL Sneakers

Z-CoiL Sneakers ($189.95) are made to help relieve foot, leg and back pain by reducing impact to the body. These interesting shoes claim to help prevent Achilles Tendinitis, Arthritis, Bunions, Plantar Fasciitis as well as back, ankle and foot pain. You can walk and run in them, so the sky's the limit. The coil technology is also supposed to ease tension and stress in your feet, which is a promise most shoes do not offer. Sounds comfortable, but they look like some sort of moon-hopper's shoe. Of course I am interested in what you guys think - are they cool or not?

Willing to trade fashion for comfort? Then buy them from HipHopShoeShop.com.

Sneakers: How Do I Choose?

When buying sneakers, it can be overwhelming because there are so many different kinds to choose from.

At your favorite athletic store, you'll find sneakers for:

Walking: These sneakers have a good amount of cushioning and are great for people who power walk, or who walk to get to work. They are lightweight and offer excellent arch support.

Running: These are lighter than other sneakers, and provide more cushion and support for you since you'll be pounding on them pretty hard with each step you take. They also offer shock absorbers, so it puts less pressure on your joints. You can find ones that are higher in the ankles to offer even more stability. You can walk, jog, run, or do aerobics in these.

Cross-training: These offer a good amount of support for low-impact exercise. You can lift weights, walk, and take a cardio class with these, but I wouldn't buy them if you're planning on doing a lot of running.

Casual: These are usually adorable, colorful, and stylish, but unfortunately not very supportive. Wear these to do some shopping, for a casual walk in the park, for lifting weights, or just to hang out in. These won't offer much support for high-impact exercise.

Basketball Shoes: These have special soles that won't mark up the court floor.

Tennis Shoes: While you could wear running sneaks or cross-trainers, tennis shoes provide more support for the contact side-to-side movements required to play racket-based sports.

Fit's Tips: Different brands of sneakers are suited for different feet. Whether you have high or low arches, narrow or wide feet, you MUST try out the sneaker before you buy it. Most stores have treadmills you can use so if you're buying running sneakers, you've got to RUN in them. I always run 1/4 mile in a sneaker to make sure it's not rubbing too high on my ankle, or squishing my toes.

I am Keen on Keens: Wasatch Crest Trail Runner

I have never been on the Wasatch Trail in Utah that is that namesake of these shoes so I cannot tell you from first hand experience how inspirational it is. What I can tell you is the Wasatch Crest by Keen is a great shoe.

Designed for long distance trail running the shoe is super supportive through the mid foot, making it easier to not roll too much from side to side - great shoes if you are prone to pronation. The soles feel thick and the shoe is engineered to protect and support all the parts of the foot that are often over taxed by running. Plus the inside of the shoe is lined with excellent wicking material and the soles are designed to grip wet surfaces.

My inaugural run in these shoes was an urban run, not a lovely trail run - we take what we can get. My route might not have tree roots but there is plenty of uneven terrain - like hopping off curbs to avoid smokers or making quick pivots around slow sightseeing tourists. So I would say my test run was pretty thorough and the shoes were great. The balls of my feet felt especially cushioned as I ran through the city. I was a little nervous running in shoes I hadn't worn at all, meaning no break-in time. In the end I was blister free and my feet felt quite happy. My trailrunners are bright orange and I could see folks on the street eying them, the make of a statement for sure. I love orange so it is a statement I can stand behind (or run on).

The shoe weighs 12 oz., which puts it on the heavy side, but makes the shoe quite durable. They are also available in aquamarine blue and sage green

Buy them online from REI for $95.

See you on the trail.

Great News From Nike

Nike President and Chief Executive Mark Parker recently announced that by the end of the year, ALL Nike running shoes will become compatible with the Nike+ iPod Sensor.

If you're not familiar with this neat little gadget, allow me to tell you about it. Basically when you buy the Nike+ iPod Sports Kit for around $30, and you get a little receiver that plugs into your iPod Nano (it doesn't work with other iPods), and a sensor that you can put in your shoe.

The sensor fits underneath the foot pad in the sole of your Nike+ iPod compatible sneaker. As of right now, Nike doesn't make many different styles of those sneaks, so I've just been attaching the sensor to my New Balance laces with this weatherproof holder from RunAway.

When you run or walk with the Nike+ iPod, your Nano will calculate and store your pace, distance, and calories burned. I use it every time I go for a run. Then when I plug it into my computer to charge, my running data gets sent to Nike.com. I can visit their website whenever I want to view my running history, to set goals, and assess my progress. It's great motivation.

It sounds like by the end of the year, we'll be able to choose from a lot more styles of the Nike+ iPod running shoes. Does this mean they'll be cheaper too? I hope so because right now they'll run you between $75 - $100.

Get Your Butt in Gear: Springboost Shoes

Walk much? Who doesn't, but are your shoes allowing you to do it properly?

Springboost B-WALK Shoe ($140.00) is a walking sneaker that automatically corrects your posture, just merely by wearing them while walking. B-Walk, is designed for the weekend warrior looking for a waterproof shoe with good grip. The outsole of the shoe has also been studied to provide increased rolling action, lengthening the stride and providing the feel of a light, dynamic walk. This is all done using Springboost's special Dorsiflexion Technology. Anyone who walks for fitness will appreciate the health benefits gained from walking in dorsiflexion (with your foot slightly flexed) such as relieved lower back pressure, straightening of the back, increased blood circulation in the legs and activation of more muscle fibers in the legs and buttocks. The shoes are sold with two sets of interchangeable insoles. One enables users to get used to dorsiflexion with an insole at 0 degrees dorsiflexion, and the other allows wearers to get more out of their walk with a 2 degree dorsiflexion insole.

They are a lot like Earth Shoes in that they promote good walking. They are similar in appearance to MBTs (though MBTs are made on a rocker rather than a decline), but they are a lot less expensive. Buy them from TheTannery.com.

FiveFingers Shoes: Cool or Not?

You were born barefoot and the FiveFingers Sprint Shoe ($80.00) encourages you to walk that way because it enhances your natural walking motion.

Also the shoes gently spread your toes to strengthen foot muscles, increase range of motion, and improve general foot health. They stimulate muscles in the feet and lower legs for greater balance, agility and strength and (yup, there's more) they also help straighten your spine, improve posture, and reduce lower back pain. They are comfortable and quick drying with a good gripping bottom, making them good for: Light hiking, trekking, traveling, fitness training, yoga, Pilates, sailing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding and fishing. Interested? Then buy them from FiveFingers.com.

Get in Gear: Axiom 2 Shoes

To some people, a sneaker is a sneaker. When you put in as much time at the gym and on the sidewalks as I do, a sneaker is so much more.

I am loving the new Axiom 2 shoe ($90.00) from Brooks Running because it is a lightweight yet ultra supportive trainer that works with people who may (or do) have pronation tendencies. Its Diagonal Rollbar -- a wedge-shaped piece of high density foam that is positioned on the medial (arch) side of the midsole to reduce the rate and speed of pronation -- makes the shoe flexible enough to allow for natural movement while still being supportive. More basically, these shoes are great for anyone training, whether it is on the treadmill or on the pavement. Get yourself a pair directly from BrooksRunning.com.

GPS Sneakers

Isaac Daniel calls the tiny Global Positioning System (GPS) chip he's embedded into a line of sneakers "peace of mind."

He wishes his 8-year-old son had been wearing a pair when he got a call from his school in 2002 saying the boy was missing. The worried father hopped a flight to Atlanta from New York where he had been on business, to find the incident had been a miscommunication, and his son was safe.

Days later, the engineer started working on a prototype of Quantum Satellite Technology, a line of $325 to $350 adult sneakers that'll hit shelves next month. It promises to locate the wearer anywhere in the world with the press of a button. A children's line will be out this summer.

The sneakers work when the wearer presses a button on the shoe to activate the GPS. A wireless alert detailing the location is sent to a 24-hour monitoring service that costs an additional $19.95 a month.

This fall, the company is unveiling a plug-and-wear version that allows wearers to remove the electronics module from old sneakers and plug it into another pair - of course they have to be one of Daniel's. This is a much better idea than the Compass Global GPS Sneakers that need to be replaced completely.

The sneaker is only meant for emergencies, so if you're convinced your boyfriend is cheating on you, you'll have to locate him yourself.

Running to Cure Asthma?

I LOVE running, but that wasn't always the case. As a kid, I always hated it. I played inside with my dolls to avoid those stupid tag games (I was always "it"). And don't even get me started on the mile run at school we'd sporadically do twice a year - I HATED running.

In college, I developed asthma and now I have to take 2 kinds of medicine everyday - if I don't, I can't even carry on a conversation without coughing. But I HATE taking it everyday.

My friend told me her husband had asthma really bad - like rush to the ER bad - and he started running regularly and it really helped.

So I gave it a try. Of course, I didn't stop taking my medication right away, I started running first. And when I say started, it was a slow start. I walked a lot in the beginning, but gradually increased the amount of time I ran, minute by minute - and now I'm up to 30 minutes.

I set a goal for myself to do it consistently, 3 times a week, and I have to say that it helped a ton. Exercising my lungs clears out any fluid I have in there. It must work for Jackie Joyner-Kersee too. Now, I can't remember the last time I had to take my albuterol.

Want to go from HATE to LOVE? Then

Get in Gear: Velocy Forward Gravity Shoes

When I think of gravity the word down usually comes to mind. I definitely do not think of gravity as a way to enhance my running, maybe my falling but definitely not my running. Until now...

The good (and super smart) folks over at Velocy, an innovative company have come up with the notion of Forward Gravity -- Forward Gravity™ Technology is engineered to assist in human locomotion by providing a support chassis at the forefoot that allows it to serve as the primary support and balance system during walking and running. Forward Gravity also reduces braking forces by shifting the emphasis of support from the heel to the forefoot. Thus relieving stress on the heel, ankle, knees, and the rest of the body.
Sounds complicated, I know.

Basically Velocy's Forward Gravity design allows runners to maintain a forward lean, resulting in improved technique which in turn leads to fewer injuries, a more comfortable run and improved performance. The Runner's Shoe (pictured, $125) is available at Velocy.com.
