You Asked: Daily Avocado Snack – Too Much?

You're asking and I'm answering . . .
Hi Fit. I was wondering if eating avocados every day is unhealthy and bad for my diet? I love avocados and i just recently was wondering if when I get super hungry before lunch or dinner, I could eat one? I know it has a bad rep for being a fatty fruit/veg..but I wanted to make sure and I was hoping you could help because I honestly don't know! Thanks!
Amorous of Avocados Ava

I too love avocados; they are green creamy goodness. While avocados do contain a high amount of fat, they mostly contain monounsaturated fat, which is one of the healthy and beneficial fats that might actually help prevent heart disease and enhance memory. However, fat is still fat even if it is the "good" kind. The recommended daily intake (RDI) of fat is 65 grams and one cup of avocado contains almost one third of your fat intake for a day. One cup equals 150 grams, which is a little over half a pound and roughly the equivalent of a medium avocado. Aside from fat content, avocados offer plenty of antioxidants like lutein and beta carotene.

I think a better approach is to eat a half an avocado a day. This will lower your fat intake, but you will still get to enjoy the ease and taste of snacking on an avocado. Half an avocado contains about 8 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein, making it a great pre-meal or pre-workout pick me up. I like to spread avocado on toasted whole wheat bread, which is why I often refer to avocados as vegan butter. This makes the perfect snack, mixing the fat, protein and carbs.

I'll have to try it on bread. I usually get table-side guacamole at a nearby Mexican restaurant. It's fresh and you get to pick which ingredients you want! I have also found a place that uses it in a veggie sub: they slater it between two layers of provolone cheese then pile on lettuce, alfalfa, tomatoes, and cucumber! It's so tasty.

I like my (sliced) avocados with finely chopped red onions, tomato, a dash or two of red Tabasco sauce and a little bit of pepper!

I love it in my salad because after stabbing and chewing crunchy lettuce it is great to bite into something so smooth (and tasty!)

I love avocados, but how are you really supposed to eat half an avocado? I mean, it works if you have someone to share it with, but otherwise they don't really keep very well overnight, and they can be pretty expensive, so I know I'm not going to cut one in half and throw half of it away. And right now neither of my sons will eat them (although they both used to love them) and my husband is usually not here when I'm eating them. Overall, if the rest of the diet is healthy, and weight is not an issue, I really doubt eating an avocado a day will make a HUGE difference. I put one in my salad, with spinach, chickpeas or chicken, and salsa.

JudyRie: Try leaving the avocado pit/seed in the half, wrap it in plastic wrap and keep it in the fridge. It should last overnight, so you could have some with dinner, then use the 2nd half in your lunch the next day.

i think they also make an avocado variation called a slim-cado. I bought some avocados at the supermarket, ate them, without realizing they were this kind they taste the same and have less fat so u can use the whole thing...if u want! not sure if anyone else has heard of these?

I'm SO glad you answered this question as it's been vexing me for a while. I always hear about good fats, but I still don't want to eat too much of them that they make me fat! I like to treat myself to half an avocado on a sammie or salad every so often, so I'm glad to know it's ok!

I have a way to slim it down and make it go farther. I got a new "magic bullet" for Christmas and am having a great time coming up with new recipes. When making guacamole add a can of white beans, any kind, tomatoes, cilantro, jalapeno, garlic and lime juice. It doubles the amount of guacamole, fills you up, and stores nicely in the refrigerator due to the lime juice. Enjoy.

My mom always encouraged me to eat more avocados.
So, I only eat 'em when she eats them.
    So.. Now I know. d:

I love avocadoes so much it's not funny. I often eat half an avocado before dinner as a snack - I like to fill the hole where the stone was with a salad dressing - whatever tickles my fancy, whether it be thousand island, Paul Newman's original or even plain balsamic vinegar. DELISH.
Otherwise I eat it in salads, on top of pizzas and tossed through with other fresh ingredients (such as tomato, basil and pine nuts) in a pasta dish.

Thanks for answering this question it's always been one of those things that bugged me!

I like mine as an avocado sandwich, made on whole wheat toast with bacon as a splurge.

The only way I really eats avocados is by making it into guacamole (combined with onion, cilantro, tomato (sometimes), lemon, and a little garlic salt)Its perfection. Plus its easy to store the left overs if you press plastic wrap into to it to keep the air out

I love avocado sammiches... whole wheat bread, lightly toasted, with a bit of avocado, fresh tomato, salt & pepper - just perfect. For extra protein, I'll often include a slice of ham as well.

    Wow.
Somehow, I've never considered that anything 'green' (i.e. fruit or vegetable) can be unhealthy and should be eaten only in moderation.
