Holiday Fit Tip: Avoid the Egg Nog

The holiday season is full of parties, and parties are full of various types of grog. Sugary fruit punches laced with rum and eggnog that should really just be called a saturated-fat bomb. One cup of eggnog contains over 11 g. of saturated fat, as well as 343 calories.

Here are two suggestions to try as alternative to those standard Winter party drinks.

  • Spritz it: Simply add seltzer water to your glass of wine. This works with any color of wine — red, white, or rosé. Not only does it cut your caloric intake in half, but it also helps you avoid the dreaded hangover.
  • Go bubbly: Champagne is actually rather low in calories. One serving of this sparkling wine contains 91 calories. To make the drink more festive, add a cranberry, strawberry, or raspberry for color.

If wine is not your thing, check out Vital Juice Daily's low-cal cocktail ideas.

I LOVE egg nog! I've tried the low fat egg nog and it is actually pretty good, I would buy again. Love the berries in the champagne....it looks so lovely and festive.

two eggnog tips that I use:

first, cut it with 7-up. Nummy!

second, my favorite is to have a 'shot'. I generally allow myself one shot of the stuff and sip it until gone. Full flavor, less fat and calories.

I love eggnog. It's a once a year treat, and I wouldn't miss it. I buy the Lucerne brand lowfat version from Vons, and it's really good. Add some extra spice to it, and I have dessert!

Add seltzer water to your wine? Where are Yum and Party to chastise this advice? Why drink wine if you would ruin the experience by diluting it? Wine is to be enjoyed for what it is.

I didn't know champagne was so low in calories. Another reason to drink it! I also love eggnog and wait all year for it to come around, but I prefer the low-fat variety. Once a year I can allow myself that!

Sorry, I love eggnog...I know it's fattening, but it's so good.

There's no way I'm avoiding it this season! I just won't overdo it.

Aww man, my roomate and I are litterally in the middle of planning a Chrismukkah party with eggnog being our house speciality. Sad I guess I'll have to go easy on it this time.

Ugh, eggnog's nasty. I've never liked it and I'm so glad. If you think the grocery store stuff is bad for you, you should try the homemade stuff with bourbon. It's probably got twice the calories. For my holiday drinking, I usually have a shot of vodka in a diet soda or a glass of dry wine. Nothing creamy or full of sugar!

Over the holidays I just throw it out the window. Eggnog with spiced rum. It is so filling that I don't graze on the other fair at the buffet.
