When You Eat Turkey, Do You Avoid Eating the Dark Meat?

We all have our favorite part of the bird and on Thanksgiving day we get to have our fill of it. Turkey meat is super high in protein and super low in fat, especially the breast meat. I am wondering if you avoid the dark meat because it is considered fattening.

So tell me...

Thanksgiving only comes once a year - when else do you roast a whole turkey?? I say relax a little and eat some darn dark meat if you like it. It won't kill you!

I don't eat dark meat, but that's because I don't like it. Ugh so slimy...

We're a tofurkey household. But I agree with isabelle 315; It's once a year... eat whatever you want. One serving of dark meat turkey or even one piece of pie does not make one fat or unhealthy.

I know I look forward to November every year for Silk Nog! Lord have mercy!

I agree with some of these posts...Thanksgiving is not only one day a year, it's usually ONE meal! If you stick to your regular schedule the rest of the time, that one meal is not going to mess you up. You might even weigh more on the scale the next morning, but it will even out.

Actually, although it has more fat, dark meat has a much higher iron content, omega-3's, etc.

I only eat the white meat, no skin, but that has nothing to do with health or anything. Simply love the taste.

I'm a white-meat girl. I only eat breast meat on the turkey (no skin). The same goes for chicken - breast or wing only! And the only time I eat the skin is if its on some buffalo wings.

I only eat the dark meat, and at thanksgiving I eat some of the skin...its a holiday!

    According to Wikipedia:

Dark meat is that way because those are the muscles that are used more. They are full of myoglobin proteins which are responsible for moving the oxygen into the cells. When the myoglobin proteins are cooked, they turn into metmyoglobins, which contain a lot of iron. Dark meat also has more vitamins, saturated fats and omega oils (both 3 and 6) than white meat.

    Yay for Carnivores!

I only like the dark meat too. It is Thanksgiving, so who cares? I am going to be eating whatever I want that day, and as much as I want of it. It's not like I eat turkey legs for dinner 4 nights a week.

I'm really weird about poultry. The ligaments and veins and bones and everything in a whole bird kinda creep me out. That's the reason I like only white meat. It doesn't really contain all that other gunk, just pure meat.

I seem to remember that my family never ate dark meat growing up. I always thought it was the gross part of the turkey, and that you weren't supposed to eat it. I never realized until I read this post that it was even edible. But, cut me some slack, I've been a vegetarian since I was 10.

When I was a kid, I loved dark meat. I spent my teenage years & early twenties as a vegetarian, and when I started eating meat again I discovered that as an adult I only like white meat.
