Bacon and Cancer

What is the connection between bacon and cancer? You have to avoid the former to avoid the latter. I know many bacon lovers out there will probably shed a few tears when they read the recent report compiled by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). Taking five years to research and using 200 scientists to compile the data, the report states that one third of all cancers are caused by diet and lack of exercise and could be prevented.

The WCRF created a list of ten tips to help prevent a variety of cancers.

  1. Stay as slim as possible, maintaining a BMI between 18.5 to 25. Excess body fat is not only a trigger for endometrial cancer, but also esophagus, pancreatic, bowel, post-menopausal breast, and kidney cancers.
  2. Exercise vigorously everyday for 30 minutes or for 1 hour of moderate exercise daily.
  3. Avoid sugary drinks and fast food.
  4. Eat a predominantly plant based diet of at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day and cereals/grains/pulses with every meal.
  5. Eat no more than 500g of red meat a week and no processed meat ever (this is the bit about bacon and ham was singled out as well).
  6. Woman should consume no more than one serving of alcohol a day and no more than two for a man.
  7. No more than 6g a day of salt
  8. Dietary supplements of vitamins and minerals are not recommended (you should be getting all your vitamins and minerals from your food).
  9. Breastfeed babies exclusively for six months.
  10. Cancer survivors also to follow these recommendations.

I DO think that this is reasonable BUT I don't think that its healthy for the omnipresent diet-craze of women around the world to be told to "stay as slim as possible". The actual report actually says to get as low as possible to a BMI of 18.5 without being underweight which is a major tricker for EDs since that kind of diet is hard to stop once you get to 18.5 (I know that from experience)

I eat bacon occasionally...it's yummy with eggs and toast! I agree with ashcwebb, I only will eat it when it's very crispy, like almost burned.

I pretty much hate bacon. (thank God)

    I'm not so keen on:

8.Dietary supplements of vitamins and minerals are not recommended (you should be getting all your vitamins and minerals from your food)

I take vitamins and think I get a fair amount of nutrients from my foods. I don't think it's bad to double up.

If you do want to eat meat I highly suggest going to a farmer's market, or finding a local supplier for organic, hormone free, antibiotic free, radiation free meat. I don't know about other places but here in North America our commercial bought meat is loaded with so much crap and some of the stuff they put into it is know carcinogens. Seriously - how come this isn't common knowledge. I bet alot of the links to getting cancer from eating meat stem from what is put into it rather than the meat itself.

Aren't the nitrates the thing to worry about with bacon, ham, and cured meats (I mean, besides the fat and cholesterol)? I always avoid any products that have nitrates, and buy organic no-nitrate bacon. Tell me FitSugar, does this help?

Nico, you are 100% right. It is disgusting, and I wish more people knew about it. Plus, we do not have the colon of a carnivore (which is short and straight, ours is long, curvy) so the meat and carcinogens rot in your body for months at a time. Yuck

I agree with Liss. I love bacon and they do say everything gives you cancer these days. Actually I have heard that everyone has cancerous cells it is just what brings it out in us. I say life is short and enjoy it.

There are women and men who have smoked, dranked and ate all the wrong foods all their life and are kicking it harder than the excercise fanatics who eat nothing but vegggies. If it makes my life shorter than oh well at least I enjoyed it. To many other things for me to worry about.

I do think though that it is all these steroids and stuff that they shoot these animals up with that is causing this.

My 9th grade biology teacher told us that burnt bacon was carcinogenic, and that was 6 years ago. It made me sad because it was my most favorite bacon, but now I've effectively phased it out of my life.
