Indoor Smokeless Cigarettes?

Smoking, thank goodness, is banned in most public places because secondhand smoke is a known health hazard. So crowds of smokers hang out on the streets puffing away since they are banned from doing so indoors. Well, what if cigarettes were smokeless? One UK nightclub, celebrity hangout Chinawhite, in London's Soho district, is trying out these new smokeless cigarettes. Made in China, the manufacturer says the invention has no harmful side-effects because there is no smoke or tar.

How does it work? This six-inch white plastic stick uses a battery-powered atomizer to create realistic puffs of "smoke," while the tip glows red when you suck. It gives a smoker the smoking experience and the nicotine high without the use of tobacco. Each cigarette contains one filter, which provides enough nicotine for 350 puffs, or about 30 cigarettes.

The thing is though, it may be cutting down on secondhand smoke, but the smoker is still getting the nicotine. There's some talk that these e-cigs may even give the user more nicotine than an average cigarette. They're also a lot more expensive, around $208 for the starter kit, and you have to continue to buy replacement cartridges.

What do you think about these smokeless cigarettes? Since they create no smoke, do you think they should be allowed in places such as restaurants, bars, buses, meetings, public buildings, and airplanes?

Um what?! This is beyond ridiculous. How about one that gives you less and less nicotine. The pack comes with several in graduated doses until you are at none at all, and have stopped smoking.

hmmm, since nicotine is an appetite suppressant, i wonder how many people will buy this for appetite control now that tobacco is not involved?

It actually sounds like something I'd like to try - of course the whole "made in china" would make me wait until someone else made it, not to mention the nicotine aspect. However, for me the whole part of smoking I like is having something in my hand and the oral fixation part...

I am 100% against smoking. However, the way I see it is that as long as it's not harming me or other innocent bystanders, why not try something like this?

i would love to try this, but would prefer if it had less nicotine. i quit smoking, but the part i miss most is the ritualistic motion, something that this provides!

this is okay. whats the problem? people do so many worse things to themselves than just nicotine, at least there won't be smoke. and even tho i don't smoke i would try this for appetite control. i don't understand the objections.

Smoking to me is just stupid anyway. So, they want to invent something that will supposedly "make it safer"? GIVE ME A BREAK... smoking is smoking.

how can the words smoking and safe be in the same sentence? Smoking is beyond disgusting and harmful so people just need to STOP SMOKING!

To see someone dying of cancer is so fricken horrible, beyond words! But then there are people who seem not to care and smoke their brains out! while others are fighting for their lives there are others taking it for granted! its so fricken stupid.

I don't think they should be a substitute for real cigarettes, but I can see them being an effective quitting aid. You get the oral fixation and hand activity that you don't get from a regular nicotine patch.
