Halloween Survival: Hand Out Candy You Don't Like

Every Halloween of my youth, we handed out the same candy: Smarties and Starbursts. While I have a huge affection for these two types of sweet treats, my mother can't stand them. They created no temptation for her what-so-ever, unlike say her favorite Snickers bar. So follow this age old advice: Hand out candy you don't like. Don't bring the temptations into your home where they can taunt you.

I know it seems sacrilege, but candy that tempts me the least is the Halloween favorite – candy corn. Tell me yours in the comment section below.

I agree with you Fit - I HATE candy corn! Every year I always have 1 or 2 pieces, thinking "maybe now I'll like it..." but I don't. I don't even know what exactly it is, but...I hate it.

I do this! I hand out those nasty orange and black wrapped peanut butter kisses that are so disgusting. My husband loves them, so any leftovers get eaten by him. Now if we were to hand out Reese's Peanut Butter cups, I'd be screwed.

This is so funny! I have been doing this for years. I usually buy things like Almond Joy because I hate anything with coconut in it or bubble gum. When my kids come home after trick or treating, I let them eat as many pieces as they like that night, they then choose their favorite 15 pieces and I buy the rest from them. I used to buy them a little gift, but since they got older, they want money. This way the candy is not sitting around for a month (I only let them eat a piece a day) and tempting me. I usually donate it to some food bank.

Me too, rigatoni... I like pretty much everything!

Candy corn I love. It's pure sugar!! Hahaha. The little pumpkins are the best ones. I like regular candy corn better than the chocolate candy corn.

I suppose the easiest way to avoid temptation would be to give our those wax vampire teeth - can't eat them at all!

I keep a candy dish at work full of candy that I don't like. It has apple, grape, and cherry Jolly Rancher suckers, Life Savers lolly pops, and Twizzlers. Our house is around the back of another, so we don't get trick or treaters.

This is a really clever idea! I'm not crazy about Jolly Ranchers, either ... they stick in your teeth. Now, if I were to buy Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, I'd be toast. Toast with indigestion.

Hi. I, too learned from my mom to hand out candy that I don't like. She hated sweetarts (I loved them and would find them and eat them). After a few years of eating the snickers and reeses meant for trick or treaters, I either by mounds/almond joys (yuck!!!!) or get candy the day of to limit my inhalation of it!

This is how I ended up with bags of "fun sized" Almond Joys and Mounds in my kitchen for 3 years.

I am not a fan of Mars bars. Bleh. Twix used to be my weakness, but I tried one last year and it tasted gross. Total turn off. I

i'm handing out popcorn balls this year. i actually kind of like them but they're so big that my jaw would not be able to handle eating more than one.

but i'm with everyone who hates mounds and almond joy! the willy wonka candies are also on the outs.

milky way midnights are my weakness and it's easier to find them in bite size portions than full size i'm always tempted to eat more.

i already have a big bowl of sour skittles waiting for tricker treaters. I know well enough not to keep anything chocolate in the house.

I wish there was more candy that I didn't like! But, I guess I could hand out Mounds bars. I hate shredded coconut.

Ha I can't believe someone mentioned circus peanuts. My kids want to try them, but I just tell them that they taste like flavored play doh. I pass out lollipops and activity pads that you can get at the doller store. My favorite candy is Reeses peanutbutter cups. Yumalicious.

I sorta do this. I hand out candy that I sorta like, but don't LOVE. Skittles/Starburst. That way I'll still eat one every now and again, but I won't engorge myself on it like if they were Kit Kat, Take 5 or Almond Joy bars.

I like candy corn, but I get sick of them real quickly.

The only candy I can think of that I hate is maybe Tootsie Rolls, maltballs or licorice. I feel terrible giving kids those things though. lol.

but.....it's the only time of year you can get candy corn. sometimes it's best when eaten by the handful, other times it's best when eaten in sections...orange, white, yellow! ha!
what candy do i pass out? whatever candy my cheap, excuse me,frugal
husband brings home. generally not all that good and certainly not high in quantity. we live on a dead end block, hardly any kids come by...so when i answer the door i give them handfuls. of course he says ... now just give them one. and i say ...o.k. honey! then i only nibble what i can from my daughters candy. funny thing, it is the ONLY time of year i will eat snickers or 3 musketeers.
GREAT HINT TO SCHOOL AGE MOMS: put all of the little chocolate bars in the freezer. they defrost by lunch time when you give them as a treat in juniors lunch sac each day!
