Do You "Bank" Calories?

Health.com recently offered some strategies to prevent the weekend from derailing your healthy eating habits. One idea was to "bank calories," which means you cut back on calories the day before you know you're going to be eating a lot, as a way of evening things out. The authors of How to Eat Like a Hot Chick are big fans of calorie banking. Do you ever do this?

No...I try to just splurge one meal on the weekend. I eat normally the day before and the day of the cheat meal. I think that keeps me on track.

I think I do it in reverse order - if I overeat one day then I try to eat less (or just am less hungry) the next day.

I will have a "smaller" or lighter meal earlier in the day if i know i am going out, but only by 100-200 calories. I have many friends that frequently skip breakfast and lunch regularly so they can splurge at dinners without guilt. So unhealthy.

while i have never really thought about it as banking calories, i do this regularly. now, it's not like i don't eat anything the day before or something. that totally would mess up my body. instead, i eat about 1700-1800 calories 4 days out of the week, so that thursday-saturday don't totally put me over the top. if i didn't do this, the college lifestyle would have made me about 20 lbs heavier, that is for sure! i wouldn't do this in a perfect world, but when you're spending a lot of time going out, drinking too much and hitting up the 24 hour pizza place a block from your apartment.. well, it becomes necessary!

for the most part though, i eat very healthy and on a regular schedule. i do vigorous exercise 3-5 times a week. this is just a way of maintaining my weight while still enjoying the "college lifestyle" so to speak.

I'm usually pretty relaxed with my eating during the weekend and stay more strict with myself during the work week.

No, I think that would mess with my body's metabolism and digestion.

Generally, I don't overeat, so there's no need to bank calories beforehand.

I try to believe in this concept but it never works. It has to be same day calories in, calories out for me to be able to maintain or lose anything.

sort of. Not so much with the calories but I do try to eat healthier the day before, foods that aren't greasy or starchy and won't cause bloating, lots of fluids and veggies.

This is only when I think of it though, for the most part it happens the next day Sticking out tongue Since it's hard to know when you're about to have a really unhealthy meal - even if you have plans to go out it doesn't mean your meal will be bad.

I don't really do that. I usually eat the same foods every day, so I keep my calories fairly steady.

Kind of. My husband likes to eat a big meal at dinnertime, so I always eat a very light lunch (salad, veggies) so that we can enjoy dinner together. That's how I "bank"- by being sure that either lunch OR dinner is very light. Otherwise, I'm more of a "paying-them-back" gal, meaning if I have a very indulgent dinner, the next day I'm sure to eat extra-healthy until I feel the heaviness out of my system.

it still shocks me when something called "Health" promotes a habit that unhealthy. so bad for you...
also, if you go into a "splurge" hungry and deprived, you're going to eat a lot more of it which cancels out all your effort anyway.

That looks really unhealthy and the onset of an eating disorder. Really, overeating every now and then is alright, the body is smart and if you have healthy habits and exercise you won't put on weight. And I mean long-term kilos, not next-day-400-grams more.

in eastern cultures there is a special day once a week or two that you don't really eat, just drink dairy products like kefir and eat some fruit and veggies. you get no more than 400cals. and lots of fluids. they do it not for weight loss, as it is an ancient thing, when people didn't need it and everyone except for kings was thin. it's done for health, it can actually lessen pains: headaches, pains in your joints ect. and it's just one day.

i think that we all do this around the holidays. we figure that if we starve ourselves for the day or 2 before thanksgiving, we can make up for the fact that we're probably going to eat A LOT that day. i try not to do this cause i think that it's really not the truth, but i guess i'm like the rest of the world and i've done this a couple of times.

I thought that it was your average calories consumed / burned over a week that determine whether you gain/lose/maintain weight. I don't go overboard on weekends, but I also don't change anything before or after a big meal/going out, whatever. Then again, I'm not on a diet. My everyday choices maintain my weight.
