Red Meat Linked to Breast Cancer

We all know that eating too much red meat can be bad for our hearts. Now new research from the University of Leeds shows that eating red meat also increases a woman's chance of developing breast cancer.

35,000 women were tested over the course of 7 years, and those who ate red meat every day had a 56% greater risk of breast cancer than those who ate none.

Processed meat such as bacon, sausage, and ham are much worse than regular red meat such as steak. Those who ate processed meat every day, ran a 64% great risk of breast cancer than those who didn't eat any red meat.

Now I'm not saying you need to omit red meat altogether (unless you want to), just try to eat it 3 or less times a week (you know how I love moderation).

Fit's Tips: Eating 30g of fiber a day could cut your risk for developing breast cancer in half. Also heart pumping exercise has healthy effects on hormone levels and weight maintenance, which could also reduce your risk.

    My guy friend eats a bacon sandwich everyday. It drives me crazy and I'm always telling him that he'll get super high cholesterol young. He eats a lot of sugar too. Sometimes I worry a lot about him.

    But personally, I only eat red meat about once a week during the school term. During the holidays I eat it about 3 times a week.

    Who eats red meat every day!?! Of those 35,000 women, I'm curious what percentage of them ate red meat every day for seven years. I'm thinking it couldn't possibly be that large a portion of the whole group.

    Hmm...a quick search doesn't turn up the answer to that. But I did find that the statistics quoted above were from post-menopausal women only. And that The most obvious link was found in postmenopausal women who ate all meat types: poultry, offal processed and red. And, interestingly, women who don’t eat much meat are less at risk from breast cancer than vegetarians – they had the lowest energy and fat intakes.

    Interesting study!
