Eggs vs. Egg Beaters

Lately I've been hearing so many people talk about how they use Egg Beaters in place of eggs. Original Egg Beaters seem like a healthier alternative to eggs, because the label says it's made from real eggs and contains no cholesterol, but the truth is it only contains egg whites. That's where the protein comes from (6g per 1/4 cup serving). Then to make up for all the missing vitamins you'd get naturally from the egg yolk, synthetic vitamins, spices, and coloring are added back in to make them look and taste more like real eggs. From my experience, they look and taste a little weird.

To hear more about eggs, Egg Beaters, and your cholesterol then read more.

Just because your cholesterol is high, doesn't mean you have to swear off real eggs forever. One egg contains 210 mg of cholesterol, and since the American Heart Association recommends no more than 300mg a day, it's OK to eat one whole egg every day if you wanted to (as long as you're limiting your intake of steak, cheese, and bacon. Plus you don't want to give up the yolk since it contains less sodium than the egg white, and is a great source of valuable vitamins such as hard to come by vitamin D, as well as calcium, and folate.

Since I'm a firm believer in eating foods as close to the real source as possible, I choose eggs over Egg Beaters. After all it is really not that difficult to separate your own egg whites. If you're concerned about your cholesterol, try eating one egg with two egg whites instead of two complete eggs. This way you'll get the benefits from the low calorie, low fat, and high protein of the egg whites, but you'll also get the vitamins found naturally in egg yolks and only 210 mg of cholesterol. Not to mention, it makes me feel better to eat an egg cracked open fresh from a shell, rather than poured out of a container.

Ugh! I hate egg beaters! I'd rather limit my amount of real eggs.

I tried Egg Beaters 100% Egg Whites. I still just prefer to separate my own. I use 1 whole egg and 2 egg whites like you suggest, for the same reasons Smiling

Same here! And I love eggs! I went to Benin, West Africa, a while back, and it seemed like they ate eggs with everything. Ever since then, I was hooked.

It is sooo annoying when people avoid eating cholesterol. Our bodies don't convert it to real cholesterol. Our bodies make cholesterol from saturated fat! grrrrrrrr.

Exactly LaurenG22. Not only that, I've read a few articles about studies where people who ate eggs lost more weight than people who ate no eggs.

'People who ate eggs for breakfast felt more satisfied and ate fewer calories at the following meal.'

I often have 2 hardboiled eggs for breakfast, and I am perfectly healthy. I never shy away from yolks and think the idea of egg beaters sounds disgusting.

i've actually pretty much stopped using real eggs when it comes to making certain things and i don't think that i'm any worse for it. i can understand that you're not getting enough vitamins from egg beaters but there are benefits from it. i have found that since they are egg whites only - they have a different cooking time and consistency/texture that they give to the food - but it's a sacrifice that i'm willing to make.

I use egg-beaters exclusively at home now. My husband has high cholesterol even though he's young and in shape. Egg-beaters are great to cook/bake with because you cannot tell at all that you did not use real eggs and his heart thanks me for it!

Actually, egg whites have half the protein of whole eggs. Whole eggs have 6 grams of protein while egg whites have 3 grams of protein.

Great post. I have always wondered why I would eat Egg Beaters over eggs. Now I know unless I worry about my cholesterol, I can probably eat the occasional egg. I eat eggs so rarely anyway. The only time I eat Egg Beaters is when I'm camping.

I love real eggs. Why eat something synthetic when you can have the real thing? This is the kind of product that doesn't make sense to me. Haven't humans been eating eggs for thousands of years?

I'm allergic to eggs. It's quite frustrating to not be able to eat them. My allergy is mild, so I can eat eggs in baked goods and such, but I miss my eggs! Are there any other good sources of protein in the morning?

And I never liked Egg Beaters either. They seem so fake and gross.

I eat eggs and oatmeal every day for breakfast. During the week I make my omelet with AllWhites, but on Sat/Sun I add a real egg to the mix. I usually have hardboiled egg whites every few days as one of my snack options, but don't eat the yolk.. mainly because unless it's deviled, or in egg salad, I don't enjoy a hardboiled egg yolk.

Eggs rock. Power to the egg!

eating cholesterol doesn't really mean your blood levels of cholesterol will go up.. certain types of fat contribute to our cholesterol levels, the other main factor is genetics and how healthy our bodies are.. that's what sucks about reports and health news when it leaves for the public to make assumptions on health.. i mean come on.. if our great grandparents ate lots of meat and eggs and produce, why are we so picky now days? oh yeah.. but our great grandparents probably didn't eat out, or eat anything out of a box either.. and pesticides weren't an issue, and people didn't mind if their produce has a spot or didn't look cute.. as long as it was edible that was enough, and it was good. i guess we judge our food by it's cover literally Sticking out tongue

    hahaha

and we are being deceived on the inside Eye-wink

I wish this myth would just die already. Eating cholesterol does not raise your serum cholesterol and there has never been any study that suggests otherwise!

Eat your yolks, it's where most of the nutrients are.

i eat two eggs in the morning probably 4 or so times a week. i could not imagine having fake eggs. i never really understood the point either, especially since i am now on a little waste as possible kick, egg cartons are recyclable(as long as you dont buy foam ones) and the carton from egg beaters are not. i just couldn't do it.

maybe in baking i could use them but they just seem kinda gross to me.

We use Eggs Beaters because my fiance loves to cook breakfast but is awful at neatly breaking egg shells, and we got tired of crunchy eggs...

EggBeaters=biggest ripoff EVER! Now they even make EggBeaters with yolks. If that isn't the biggest joke, I don't know what is. If you are somehow concerned with the calories in eggs, just mix an egg with some whites and eat that. It doesn't seem that difficult, especially since you get one carton of eggs for the price of a carton of EggBeaters.
