Fit Tip: Mind Your Knees

As my mom would say, "Take care of your knees, you only get one pair," and nothing could be more true than when it comes to running.

Running is a great way to burn a lot of calories and tone up that lower body, but it can also be pretty tough on your knees — it's not called runner's knee for nothing. No matter if you're an outdoor or indoor runner, one of the best things you can do for yourself and your knees is to switch up your workouts frequently, and don't forget that runners need strength training, too. Think about all your favorite ways to exercise and incorporate them into your cardio plans. You don't need to give up running completely, but your body will thank you in the long run if you add a little variety today.

    so i didn't quite understand...
what does "switch up your workouts frequently" means..? that you should do different kinds of exercise weekly (in addition to running) in order to prevent injury?

i have bad first hand experience of the downsides to running. i broke my knee a few years back and i still can't run. it's really upsetting since that's one of the things that was a staple in my workout. granted the elliptical is ok since it's less intensive on my knees - it's just not the same thing Sad

I have just developed this after four months of gym attending. I am going to miss running but I think I will switch it for something else for a while because as soon as i sit down, my knees hurt!

My knees HATE me. My running shoes are old, but I can't afford to replace them. I'm hoping that once classes get into full swing at my college, I can trade my run for a swom.
