Starter Arms: Exercise Video

Here is the third installment of the Test Case series: Starter Arms. This video is all about toning the upper arms to get you ready for springtime tank tops.

You will need a set of 5 to 8 pound dumbbells. If you don't have weights experiment with soup cans or full water bottles. Try to do this every other day for 2 weeks and see if your arm tone changes. Consider it an experiment or a challenge.

Some of the exercises are done with just one weight, but experiment and see if you can handle using both. Feel free to repeat the series once or twice.

Why not print this chart out to take these moves to the gym.

Hmmm, I have to comment that I find the background to the video kind of distracting. I much preferred the first two test cases that were just straight video shoots without the background editing.

The form on this video can really hurt someone. The bicep movement should be controlled instead of swung. In the tricep kickbacks the elbow and has to be raised so that the top portion of the arm has to be parallel to the ground. These are great exercises and effective when done correctly.

So great! Tank top season here I come!

On the form and background comments.... i think the scrolling background may just make it harder to see the form but if you listen to the voice-over, because fit talks about proper form, etc. The angles may just be weird, you know?

I personally appreciate the videos very much! thanks fit!

Great work out for the arms. Have to get started on this.

One comment though - Fit has been talking about eating disorders and healthy body images all week. Now I'm not saying that the girl in the video is ill, but she does look like she wouldn't be able to lift the weights if they were just a little heavier.
Please use a 'normal' shaped woman, someone the majority of us can relate to.

Just want to pipe in and say women's bodies come in all shapes and sizes - the message from the National Eating Disorder Association was that people should feel comfortable in their genes - and there are a lot of different body types out there.

Some women are trying to add muscle, while some are trying to lose weight. Some are tying to get more physically fit to feel stronger and healthier. And isn't that what the lean ladies are doing by trying to add muscle (strength training is great for building up bone density, which can combat osteoporosis) and those trying to lose weight are trying to get healthy (being over weight can contribute to a variety of diseases).

Thanks all for the feedback on the moving background. The feedback helps us decide how to improve things in the future.

I agree that women's bodies come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes. I've been both very thin (blessed with a high metabolism) and overweight (blessed with two beautiful children Smiling ). That said, I think the instructor in the video looks healthy, but some who are trying these exercises for the first time might relate more easily to someone with a frame more representative of the average gal.
And I would love that girl's arms. Maybe that will motivate me to do these exercises!

The arm exercises are great! The model looks healthy and fit and the background is fine. (Some people complain about anything and everything.) I printed the the exercises and do them in a room away from my computer. Remember, you can take the printout to the gym. Keep up the great work, fit!

Oh, I do not like the pushups.

Thank you FitSugar! I've been doing this workout for 3+ weeks and have noticed a big improvement in both the appearance and strength of my arms. Keep the videos coming!

Love love LOVE it!! I've been doing your inner thigh workout video, as well as the abs one and the booty one and I was wondering if you had an arms one that only needed small dumbells... and voila, my prayer was answered when I found this!

i have been using these exercises for the past month at the gym and not only do my arms look and feel toned, but i also feel more confident at the free weights section of the gym. i've always felt intimated by all the men in that section because they seemed as if they knew what they were doing. now that i know what to do (and what not to do--thanks for the videos!) i don't mind combing through the men at the gym and fighting for my own mirror space. viewing your OWN muscles flex is the best!

    keep up the great work!!
