Eating disorders affect 5 million people in the U.S. More than 10% of those diagnosed with anorexia nervosa will die from the disease. Seeking to put a human face on these sobering statistics, acclaimed photographer Lauren Greenfield went inside a Florida treatment center to tell the stories of four women who are literally dying to be thin.

The devastating documentary film titled Thin, reveals her findings. It is captivating and you are drawn in by the heart-wrenching stories of these girls and their painful struggles as they each try to recover.

You can purchase Thin, a groundbreaking book about eating disorders. Greenfield's photographs are paired with extensive interviews and journal entries from twenty girls and women suffering not only from their eating disorders, but from the personal struggles that lead to the disorders in the first place.

this is terrifying. thanks Fit, i think we all need to see that. all this complaining about how "fat" we are and how we need to diet. when i saw that clip i was like "WOW" im stunned and like suzanne, speechless.

there's a lady in my gym who has a body like that, and she exercises on the cross trainer for hours at a time and you can totally tell she's pushing her body too far, but none of the trainers ever stop her etc. its so obv that she has a problem and yet i see her there almost everyday and i always worry, "what if she justs drops dead on the machine one day?" its scary.

They had Thin on HBO for awhile a few months ago, and I must say.... it was absolutely fascinating, but frustrating at the same time. This is such a difficult thing to have happen to you, and such a horrible disease to overcome. I work with a few people that have had eating disorders in the past, and they never "really" recover...

I've had close friends with eating disorders, and it's so hard to watch them rationalize why they push themselves so far.

I believe it has a lot to do with the media, but there is also a driving passion inside people with eating disorders. It's a strong feeling of not feeling good enough, not loving yourself enough. It was so horrible to watch someone you love so much feel unworthy of love.

i watched the documentary on youtube and it was so moving. I totally understand where all those girls were coming from. All the pain and confusion an eating disorder brings is just so devastating. I hope all those girls are in a better place today.

I have suffered with this for many, many years. And after my last surgery I ended up being 67lbs. That scared me, I think for the first time. But now I feel like I'm too heavy, it's just a never ending circle...I can totally relate. And too many people like it's just about body image, which is a part but it's also about control, which they did bring out in this. My hope would be that more people could help rather than just point out the problem, which maybe this film/book can do.

I am really sorry that I didn’t see all the episodes from this tv show. Finally someone had the courage to show to all those girls out there who are obsessed about becoming thin what a Drug Rehab Program for anorexia and bulimia is and how those girls refuse to actually think their sick. Thank you for sharing this video with us. Indeed it is a very powerful one!
