France is a little behind on the whole smoking is deadly issue but you've got to hand it to them with their newest step towards health.

Starting tomorrow, Feb. 1, France will be implementing a new law banning smoking in schools, airports, hotels, offices and other public spaces. This ban will be followed by phase two in France's war on tobacco, that will prohibit smoking in cafes, restaurants and clubs on January 1, 2008.

It's about time! Over 30% of the French population smokes (but almost 49% of those are aged 18 to 25). That is more than in any European country except Greece, where it's 42% [gasp].

In other smoking news, the EU is considering proposing a total smoking ban in public places for all 27 member countries.

Wow!! Go France, even though France and smoking seem to go hand and hand...As an ex smoker I hate the smell of cigarettes and where I live you can't smoke in bars or restaurants anymore.
Having said that, I do think law makers are on a witch hunt where smokers are concerned and it is getting a bit carried away. It is a difficult thing to quit and people wont until they are damn good and ready! Sure it is bad for our health but so is obesity and I don't see people banning McDonalds.

I never understand how people can smoke and eat at the same time. Yuck. I lived abroad in Rome for four months, and it grossed me out.

^ you're not allowed to smoke inside schools until high school, and then it's in restricted areas of the school. Still, I never thought France would manage to go for the ban one day! I'm not sure why they want to wait until 2008 though...
I went back to France over the holiday, and almost died of suffocation when my friends lighted up their cigarettes in a restaurant. It's just disgusting and a total lack of respect for other people!

I'm not surprised about the statistics of French smokers. I'm glad the country is recognizing that it's not appealing and it produced negative stereotypes about their people.

I'm Greek and I'm surprised by how many smokers are over there. Ugh, what a turn-off!
